Information about the French minor (from the World Languages and Cultures' website)
As Professor of French at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, I am proud to share some recent accomplishments of our students. These are some recent and remarkable examples of how studying French can lead to exciting global opportunities and academic success:
TAPIF Teaching
Three Cal Poly students have been selected for the highly competitive TAPIF program (Teaching Assistant Program in France) for the 2025–26 academic year. Two of them will be teaching English in Lille, and one of them will be teaching in Grenoble — all of them gaining first-hand experience living and working in French-speaking communities.Graduate School Distinction
One of our students has been admitted to a master’s program in bioinformatics at Yale University, with an exceptional scholarship package. She was accepted into five of the eight top-tier graduate programs to which she applied — demonstrating the competitive edge a multilingual, global perspective can provide.International Internship Experience
Another student recently completed a prestigious internship at the French Embassy in Serbia, deepening his knowledge of diplomacy, international relations, and cultural exchange.French Flair in Athletics
Even Cal Poly’s tennis program is benefiting from the global perspectives our students bring, including cultural ties and international engagement shaped by their study of French.
These successes illustrate the wide range of paths that open up through the study of French — whether in education, science, public service, or beyond. My colleagues and I are dedicated to helping students connect their language skills with meaningful personal and professional opportunities.
