Free The Bid is a non-profit organization that focuses on advocating for female directors and equal opportunity to bid on commercial jobs within the greater film industry. They solve the problem of ad agencies only presenting males for director bids, which typically results in lost years of little to no field experience for women. Free the Bid uses tools globally to ensure equality and diversity among several industries.
In a Variety interview, founder Alma Har'el speaks on how reels that come from women are typically seen as not "competitive" enough compared to their male counterparts. Female directors only take up 3.6% of the television and film industry and Free the Bid works with organizations to make this number a little fairer. Check out the interview were Alma describes the "whole new world" in advertising that Free the Bid is creating:
Alma Har'el, Founder of Free the Bid
Women are constantly overlooked in the filmmaking and advertising industry. The female gaze is not a beauty that every eye can hold, but Free the Bid boosts these women's opportunities by providing that platform. Alma Har'el has launched Free the Work from Free the Bid, which will provide automated tracking systems so that industries can ensure the fight against systemic discrimination. Har'el states, "We use services daily to discover new (things) It's time we treat talent-discovery of underrepresented creators with the same level of urgency and innovation." Free the Work not only focuses on finding opportunities for women in the film industry but on finding work for minorities in all industries that choose to participate.
