Vaidehi (real name Janaki Srinivasa Murthy), born in 1945, in Kundapura, Dakshina Kannada District, Karnataka is a well-known Kannada fiction writer and poet, renowned for her espousal of the cause of women. Her writings, generally described as post-modernist, depict the plight of women in an indignant and rebellious tone. In fact, it is told that her creative self blossomed as a result of her encounters with patriarchy, in search of her personal freedom. For instance, daring to sit on a chair was, for her, one of the heroic feats she accomplished in her childhood, in defiance of the social injunction that girls should not sit on chairs in presence of the male members of the family, let alone male members from outside. She longed for the freedom that she was denied on account of being a woman, but enjoyed in full measure by her brothers. Her short stories and novels lament the discrimination and unequal treatment meted out to women in society. She successfully takes up cudgels on their behalf, using her pen as an effective weapon for social transformation.

Notable among the 68 recipients of Kannada Rajyotsava Award were Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) S. Somanathan, retired Supreme Court Judge V. Gopalgowda, Director of Kidwai Institute of Oncology Dr. Ramachandra, senior journalist Maya Sharma, freedom fighter Puttaswamy Gowda and Prof. Gopalan Jagadish to name a few.

Veer is a Sanskrit title , meaning warrior, this title was given to Savarkar by Lok manya Tilak , a Christian concert like you will never understand the sacrifices made by Savarkar, for you converts the foreigner Sonia Gandhi ( Antonio Mino) is freedom fighter.

PS : Only virgin Mery can help you if you donot know who is Tilak

Mr Kili Jolsiyar ,

Read about Savarkar porperly. I am from Maharashtra.

How can you call a Freedom Fighter an opportunist. Mr Savarkar was a lawyer he could have easily got a nice life as a lawyer but he dedicated his life for vision. He was IN freedom struggle right from his teenage years.

People doubting and not respecting own leaders is a weakness outsiders have harnessed.

Broaden your vision so that coming generations come to know about India and its culture or else history repeats.

Calling Savarkar bigoted what about your tolerance about views you cannot respect.

As the freedom struggle gained momentum, literature became an important tool for mobilizing the masses. In Dakshina Kannada, a district in present-day Karnataka, literary outpourings by way of journals, periodicals, newspapers, and magazines played an important role in awakening the nationalistic consciousness of the people and thereby garnering support for the Freedom Movement. Christian Missionaries such as the Basel Mission organization played a prominent role in the growth of literature in the district. Apart from religious activities, these groups were also interested in learning the vernacular language and promoted writing in the local language of the state. This led to the publication of the Kannada/Mangalore Samachara in 1842, the first Kannada daily to be started in the state. The paper was edited by Reverand Hermann Mogaling and published by the Basel Mission Organisation. The Mangalore Samachara played a crucial role in creating public opinion and awareness among the people of Dakshina Kannada. In the later years, the district continued to thrive with several periodicals and newspapers published on a weekly and monthly basis, which helped keep the nationalist spirit alive.
