In modern Germanic language-speaking areas and some other Northern European countries, yule and its cognates denote the Christmas holiday season. In addition to yule and yuletide in English,[21] examples include jul in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, jl in Iceland and the Faroe Islands, joulu in Finland, Joelfest in Friesland, Joelfeest in the Netherlands and julud in Estonia.[citation needed]

I noticed the bark immediately, Deb, really! I made chocolate yule logs every Christmas Eve for years and tried multiple ways to make nice bark. None looked as authentic as yours, which I expect can be equally well done with regular chocolate as white. Sadly, however, after years of making yule logs, my family nervously and delicately informed me that they never really liked it all that much and would like to try something else for Christmas dinner dessert, please.

Beyond perfect timing. I always make a yule log for December solstice and this year my chocolate adverse partner requested gingerbread, and my white chocolate loving child thought yule log would be the right place to squeeze in some white chocolate. I only recently saw bark like this and was speculating about how its done.

I will have to adapt to make it gluten free (above family members are celiac), but since most of the structure comes from the eggs I expect any high starch blend will work.

Thank you for always being a step ahead.

I often make a yule log for Christmas dessert, and have experimented with all kinds of cake and filling combinations over the years. This was, by far, the best. The gingerbread cake was perfectly flavourful and paired so nicely with the whipped cream filling. I threw in some sprigs of rosemary with the cranberries and it made a beautiful garnish. Thanks Deb, this is a keeper for sure!

Made this for Christmas eve dinner..huge success! I have never done a yule log or even a jellly roll before so this seemed a stretch to me. Your instructions were clear..it went together exactly as you said it would and was delicious. I really love the gingerbread spicing instead of chocolate.

Despite my unglamorous association there is something quite elegant and beautiful about the Bche de Nol. According to Larousse Gastronomique the yule log cake tradition started in the 1870s when Parisian pastry chefs decided to replace the less elaborate brioche style fruit loaf with this more festive confection. Although I am quite partial to the Panettone style breads, I can see why pastry chefs created something a little more fussy to work on, that is just how we are!

This yule log (aka Bche de Nol) is not a difficult cake to make, but there are a good number of steps involved. Lets just call it a labor of love :). No worries, I have pictures for every step of the way, as usual ;). The cool thing is, you can make every part of this cake ahead of time and assemble it later. I made the cake base and ganache 2 days in advance and left it at room temp which is totally fine.

Hi Calla, you will need to adjust the recipe a little bit with a smaller half sheet pan. Here is an example that you could adapt into a yule log. I think you will find the measurements for the cake batter useful. ?

Dear Sally, Thank you so much for such detailed recipes. I have been watching holiday baking shows for two and decided my wife and I would host a homemade dessert party this Christmas season. at 51 I HAVE NEVER BAKED, but I made your yule log and it was pretty darn good! I was so proud of my first baking project. THANK YOU

2. A yule log is another option. In honor of Thor, take the largest oak log you can find (or can handle) and kindle it, either in an indoor fireplace or an outdoor fire. Be sure to save some of its charred remains to use for lighting next year's log.

When I say I have created the BEST recipe for mini yule logs which happen to be vegan and gluten-free, that is no exaggeration. These mini cakes are mind-blowing good! These mini logs are an alternative recipe to my giant Gluten-free Vegan Yule Log (which is already getting raved about on instagram and Tiktok!).

We tidy the house so its clean and fresh for anyone who might want to visit. The sidhe are famously annoyed by mess and like to cause a stramash on these nights around yule. You can hear about this in a recorded interview here. Ministers apparently also prowled the countryside to check that nothing out of the ordinary was being cooked on Christmas day. You can listen to the audio recording at

Ancient people were hunters and spent most of their time outdoors. The seasons and weather played a very important part in their lives. Because of this many ancient people had a great reverence for, and even worshipped the sun. The Norsemen of Northern Europe saw the sun as a wheel that changed the seasons. It was from the word for this wheel, houl, that the word yule is thought to have come. At mid-winter the Norsemen lit bonfires, told stories and drank sweet ale.

It was also the Druids who began the tradition of the yule log. The Celts thought that the sun stood still for twelve days in the middle of winter and during this time a log was lit to conquer the darkness, banish evil spirits and bring luck for the coming year. 17dc91bb1f
