Pandora is a subscription-based music streaming service owned by the broadcasting corporation Sirius XM Holdings that is presently based in Oakland, California inside of the United States. The service carries a focus on recommendations based on the "Music Genome Project", which is a means of classifying individual songs by musical traits such as genres and shared instrumentation. The service originally launched in the consumer market as an internet radio service that would generate personalized channels based on these traits as well as specific tracks liked by the user; this service is available in an advertising-supported tier and additionally a subscription-based version. In 2017, the service launched Pandora Premium, which is an on-demand version of the service more in line with contemporary competitors.

The company was founded in 2000 as Savage Beast Technologies, and initially conceived as a business-to-business company licensing the Music Genome Project to retailers as a recommendation platform. In 2005, the company shifted its focus to the consumer market by launching Pandora as an internet radio product. Pandora is a freemium service; basic features are free with advertisements or limitations, while additional features, such as improved streaming quality, music downloads and offline channels are offered via paid subscriptions.

In April 2013, Pandora announced that its radio streaming service had 200 million users, including 70 million monthly active users.[19] By December 2013, Pandora accounted for 70% of all internet radio listening in the United States.[1]

Pandora's business model was threatened by changes to royalty structures affecting internet radio in the United States, with the Copyright Royalty Board having ordered increases to per-song performance royalties (which are not paid by terrestrial radio) in March 2007.[11][65][66] Pandora was a member of an industry group, SaveNetRadio, which opposed the increases.[11] In August 2008, Westergen told The Washington Post that they were "approaching a pull-the-plug kind of decision", arguing that "the moment we think this problem in Washington is not going to get solved, we have to pull the plug because all we're doing is wasting money."[67]

On July 7, 2009, SoundExchange announced that agreements had been reached on royalty rates for internet radio, with larger webcasters paying a minimum of 25% of total revenue or rates per-song per-listener, whichever is higher. Pandora described the new rates as being "a middle ground that, while perhaps not meeting all of our aspirations, still represents a thoughtful and reasoned outcome under the circumstances." Due to the new rates still being relatively high in comparison to terrestrial radio, Pandora announced that ad-supported service would be limited to 40 hours per-month, and that users would be required to pay a $0.99 fee (separate from the Pandora One subscription, which is ad-free) to receive unlimited listening for the remainder of the month [68][69][70] With an update to the Pandora player in September 2011, the 40 hour cap was extended to 320 hours.[50][71]

In 2014, Pandora signed an agreement with some music copyright owners for lower royalties in exchange for more frequent streaming of songs. Though not illegal, this practice raised comparisons to payola, which is illegal payment for airplay on terrestrial radio.[86]

Pandora became fairly popular within just two years. Starting from 2010 to 2012 Pandora's registered users had increased from 45 million to 125 million. The company's revenue increased from $55 million to $274 million, in which a majority of it from advertising. In order to appeal to a large audience of consumers, Pandora offers ad-free access for $36 a year.[90] During its 2011 fiscal year, Pandora reported $138 million in revenue with a $1.8 million net loss, excluding the cost of a special dividend associated with the IPO.[91] Overall, Pandora has a 78% of Internet radio and a 9.3% share of the U.S. public radio. Finally, in 2013 industry-wide total radio ad revenue increased to $17.6 billion in the US.[92]

You won't actually be able to add specific songs to your Thumbprint Radio manually - as you continue to thumb up tracks across your regular radio stations, those will also get added to your Thumbprint Radio rotation.

@Blipsford_Baubie is correct. A radio station isn't a fixed discography of your tracks. It just means that the "station" will focus on tracks and artists similar to yours. Your tracks may or may not get heavier weighting, but of course if you only have one or two songs, they're not going to get played very often.

I tried to explain, there's no real such thing as stations in the sense that you're thinking of. They're just starting points of search results. If I search for an artist and then hit play on what comes up, that creates a "station" by that in my pandora play list. It's not something global. Same if I search for a song and then select the song - a station will be created with the name of the song.

At any rate, the part about the app vs. pandora in general is of no significance. I get exactly the same results searching for your artist name from the web (and not even logged in) as I do when logged into the app.

I have a problem in my Pandora app that has been going on since the last update or two to the app. If my screen is locked and an ad plays, the station will stop playing. Upon unlocking my phone, it displays an alert which reads something like, "Alert: we paused Pandora radio while the audio was muted." After clicking an okay button and hitting play, I'm good to go. This problem does not occur consistently and is only an annoyance. However, if anyone has encountered this problem before and has a solution, I would certainly appreciate hearing it.

the easiest way of doing this is in my opinion is to play what you want through the sonos app, open the driver details (refresh the page if you haven't already), then copy string in the uri variable in the state variable section.

it should look something like this: x-rincon-mp3radio:// -pro.com:8024/

this can then be used with the playTrack command in the driver ui, or in any app that exposes playTrack from music players.

When creating or editing an existing Alarm I am unable to select a Pandora radio station from my list of saved stations. My existing alarms configured with Pandora station are working fine just cannot change to a different Pandora station.

If you haven't heard of Pandora, you should. Pandora is a customizable radio service that is mostly free with commercials or $36 a year for commercial free plus additional features. I say "mostly" because recently they give you 40 hours free a month (with commercials) and if you go over they shut you down unless you pay $1. Since I'm very cheap, I use the free version and make sure I don't go over 40 hours a month.

In the morning, when I'm doing my Research & Development, I tend to listen to a Pandora radio station based on the song, Say My Name by Odesza. Then, when it comes to doing work, I switch over to either classical music or Gregorian chant. The other morning, while making this switch, I started to think about the way in which Pandora's "recent stations" list animates the newly-selected station to the top of the list. It occurred to me that I didn't know how to build an animation like this; so, I wanted to give it a go.

The first recommendation was to check out Pandora radio. I got an email from a friend (sorry, I don't remember which one) suggesting I go to their website and check it out. I did. And I loved it. Now, I'm hooked on it, play it almost every day at work and have gotten a number of other people hooked on it. What it is, if you haven't checked it out is a site that allows you to create your own online radio stations based on a particular band or song you like. You create a station around My Chemical Romance and not only do you get all their songs, you get songs that are by artists that have similar qualities and that people who like that band tend to also like. And as you go along, you can customize it further by tagging which songs that it plays are your favorites and which ones you don't ever want to hear again on that station.

This is great! I have fairly eclectic tastes and some of the artists I like aren't incredibly popular. For instance, I love happy ska music. I can never find a place to listen to just ska. I have Sirius satellite radio, but with all the sub genres there, they still don't have a ska station. On Pandora, I created a Less Than Jake station and a Reel Big Fish station. Both stations play bands that, like the featured artist, play upbeat, happy ska. Plus, I built another station around the song "Anthem" by Zebrahead. So, now instead of no place to find a steady diet of ska, I have three different online radio stations devoted to ska. The selection goes very deep, they even have my daughter's favorite band, a metal rock band from Japan called Dir en grey.

but be warned at this moment there is bug that doesn't let you save more than one radio channel , more than 1 saved radio channel doesn't stay added after restart ,[unless they secretly fixed it mini patches without mentioning it.] :dntknw:

With a monthly audience of more than 72 million active listeners, Pandora's lead in the streaming radio market is a significant one. But the Oakland-based company's advantage over its competitors - which now include Apple's iTunes Radio - goes beyond monthly listener metrics. Pandora has garnered its sizeable following by impressively delivering on its promise to "give people music they love". Indeed the most attractive premise of streaming radio - and the area where Pandora excels - is that listeners can create stations that play songs matched to their individual tastes, with only minimal user input. To do this consistently requires big data and the ability to leverage it in meaningful ways. 0852c4b9a8
