Amazon has started claiming they are going to stop supporting books in .mobi formats in August 2022. I've had reports as of 2022/11/15 that folks have still acquired the dictionary and successfully loaded it. But who knows, maybe it will stop! Minimum price moved to $0, but if you download and successfully use it, please think about coming back and purchasing for a non-zero amount to support the work I've done with custom dictionaries.

This is a custom Kindle dictionary for the Dune series. It makes looking up Dune terms as easy as looking up other words from your Kindle's default dictionary. After buying, you simply need to get the dictionary on your kindle (two potential ways are over USB or emailing it to your Kindle's email address) and then it acts as a built-in dictionary. Depending on what version software your Kindle is running, you may need to change your default dictionary to the Dune Dictionary.

The difference between reading Dune without this dictionary and with it is like the difference between struggling to survive without water and having water to spare. My enjoyment of Dune (and the following books) skyrocketed once the barrier to looking up words was reduced to effectively nothing. I wish I had created this dictionary when I first grew frustrated with looking up words (which was shortly after beginning the book).

I've found this dictionary useful when reading all of the Dune novels. Personally, I think this dictionary made reading Dune enjoyable and would have easily paid three dollars for it. Instead of charging three dollars I'm setting the minimum price low, at one dollar, because I want this to be available to everyone. I wasn't able to immerse myself in Dune before I created this dictionary and I don't want price to hold anyone back. If you feel like paying more you have the option. Dune is truly a terrific book (and series) that unfortunately is painful to read on modern devices. This dictionary removes the pain of reading Dune on a Kindle.

Android Kindle users have recently (as of 2022/06) started having issues with the Kindle app getting stuck in some sort of state where it thinks it needs to download the dictionary. I'm unsure how to work around this. If you are intending to use this on the Kindle app on an Android device, you are doing so at your own risk. It used to work and I imagine there is some way of getting it to work but I'm unable to figure it out.

To display a dictionary definition of a word, long-tap (that is, tap and hold) a word. The selected word is highlighted as white text on a black background. When you release your finger, a short dictionary definition for the word appears onscreen in a pop-up box. To clear the definition, tap anywhere outside the pop-up box or simply tap the X in the upper-right corner.

As shown on the left in the figure above, if you want to know more, tap Show Full Definition and a dictionary page opens with the full dictionary information for the word. Press the Back icon on the toolbar to return to your text.

If the writing is too small for you (cough, ahem, not saying anything personally), you can hit the enter key on the Kindle. It looks like a downward arrow that smashed into the ground, broke at a ninety-degree angle, and is pointing to your left. ?That will open the word in the dictionary itself. Once you are there, it is just like you are in any other book. You can use the Aa key to increase the text size. You can even bookmark the page (Alt+B) or make a note (Menu-Add a Note or Highlight-start typing). After you look at the word and definition, hit the Back button to go back to where you were in the book.

Definitions for words don't show up when I press a word. All I get is the choice to DL the Google or Wikipedia ones. So how do I get the built-in dictionary to work? I have the latest version of the app.

I had the same problem bud I found out how to solve it. Go to your Kindle account online and there you will see a list of your books as well as some other items - FREE DICTIONARIES! Click on the "Actions..." button on the right, select "Deliver to my..." and choose where you want to be able to use the dictionary. After that, the downloaded dictionary should remain in yout device.

I want to buy an extra Japanese dictionary for the Kindle 8, and the most important feature is that it can look up conjugated verbs. Other than that, good example sentences is always a plus. It can be J-E or J-J. Any suggestions?

Our dictionaries are generally compatible with 2nd generation and newer Kindles, and Kindle Fires with Fire OS 4 or higher. As some languages (eg, Russian) have more limited compatibility, please refer to the product description for your dictionary for details.

If you are unsure which generation Kindle you own, please see our Compatibility Table.

Default dictionary selection is currently supported in Kindle for iPad and Kindle for iPhone (version 4.0 and higher) and Kindle for Android (version 4.0 and higher), but not in Kindle for Mac or Kindle for PC.

Tap on a word to look it up. When the Dictionary pop-up window appears, you will see a button with either the name of the current default dictionary or the text "Change Dictionary". Tap on this button to bring up the list of available dictionaries, then select the dictionary you want to use as default from the list.

In the Dictionaries list, you can select a default dictionary for each language for which you have multiple dictionaries. For example, if you have dictionaries for English, Spanish and German, you will see these languages listed along with the current default dictionary for each. (If you only have one dictionary for a particular language, it is pre-selected as default and there is nothing you need to do.)

Press the Home key. At the Home screen, select Menu, then Settings. At the Settings screen, press Menu again, then select Change Primary Dictionary. In the Dictionaries list, you can select a default dictionary for lookup. Highlight the dictionary you want to use, and then press OK.

Note: The dictionary you select will only look up words for eBooks tagged in the same language. For example, if you highlight a word in an eBook tagged as German, you will only be able to use a dictionary that is tagged as German. See the description of your specific eBook(s) to verify this information.

In 4th generation and later Kindles, Kindle Oasis, Kindle Voyage, Kindle Paperwhite, and Kindle Touch, if you only have one dictionary for a particular language, there is nothing for you to do. The dictionary displayed is pre-selected as the default for the corresponding language.

It is the way the Kindle eBook reader is designed. Amazon only allows publishers to define a single direction for word lookup in an eBook, which means a single-volume print bilingual dictionary must be offered as two separate eBooks in the Kindle Store. For example, if a print bilingual dictionary contains both German-English and English-German sections, we make it available as two eBooks for Kindle: a German-English dictionary for lookup of German words and an English-German dictionary for lookup of English words.

Yes, you can do this on Kindle Oasis, Kindle Voyage, and Kindle Paperwhite. From the Home screen, bring up the Menu and select Settings. Select "Language & Dictionaries", then "Keyboards". Choose the keyboard for the language in which you'll be searching for words (for instance, if you have a Russian-English dictionary, you should select "Russian" here). Note that you may need WiFi access to download your keyboard, depending on the language.

Once you have activated the keyboard, open your dictionary from the "Dictionaries" folder in your Library. Tap on the magnifying glass icon to bring up the search. Once you see the keyboard on screen, tap on the Globe icon next to the space bar until you see the keyboard you want to use. Pressing it repeatedly will cycle through all active keyboards on your device, allowing you to return to its default keyboard.

If you are unable to look up words in an eBook with one of our dictionaries, you can try looking up words in an eBook we have verified as correctly encoded. If you are able to look up words successfully in the appropriate eBook below, it means the dictionary is working correctly on your Kindle, and the language of your eBook is probably incorrectly encoded.

a. Words that are not in the dictionary will not be found. Just like when you buy a print dictionary, the words contained in the dictionary correspond to the size of the volume. For example, it is easy to see the difference when comparing the print versions of a standard and an Unabridged dictionary; the Unabridged is significantly larger. The Collins dictionaries we offer are among the largest in the Collins line. Additionally, certain word types like proper names, technical jargon, or words that are short-lived (like invented words or slang) probably won't be there.

NOTE: If you find a problem with a particular word that you do not think would be too common to search for or is actually in the dictionary you purchased, please let us know. There may be another issue making this happen. Please email us at techsupport@intangiblepress.com. When you send the email, please include the following information: Kindle Model (Paperwhite, DX, etc.); Kindle Software Version (available at bottom of Menu > Settings screen or Settings > Menu > Device Info); Dictionary Title and Date of Purchase; the Title of the eBook (from which you were unable to look up words). We'll do our best to help diagnose the cause of the problem.

So, I needed to either find a dictionary file that contained inflections and then figure out how to convert it into a Kindle-friendly format, or I to somehow match roots to an extant Turkish-English dictionary to generate my own dictionary file. Luckily, I was able to find a massive corpus with inflections: the Babylon Turkish-English dictionary boasting almost 169,000 definitions. The file itself is available for download as a 7.5 MB .BGL file, unfortunately a proprietary dictionary file type. Of course, finding this dictionary file was the true crux of the matter: all the necessary information had been compiled and was contained inside. However, the biggest hurdles would come in trying to convert these millions of lines of text into a format that the Kindle could read and use. 0852c4b9a8
