His new album, which is his 8th studio album (not including the Curious George soundtrack), is called Meet The Moonlight, and it is what you expect from a Jack Johnson album - good guitar and musicianship with laid back songs about anything from societal errors to religion and to nostalgic memories.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to write and say that I bought the album and it just arrived this morning. I listened to it this evening and it was just phenomenal. I'm a Miles fan,but I had never heard this album. Thanks for reviewing it and bringing it to my attention. The sound was excellent as well.

This LP has been a staple in my library for over forty years as well. It's been many years, but I do recall seeing the album sold with two covers. I believe that the version with Miles on the front cover, leaning back with his horn, was the Miles Davis album. The version with the depiction of Jack Johnson in the car on the front cover appeared to be marketed as the movie soundtrack. They had the same content, perhaps directed to different audiences?

Actually, the first version (and cover) was the one with Jack Johnson in the car. After a few months of tepid sales CBS and/or Miles decided to re-release the album with Miles on the cover to make it more obvious that this was indeed a Miles Davis album. (And a damn good one.)

MoFi therefore has used the first edition cover.

Have a ton of Miles vinyl. New of this album, but nothing about it. Now I do, and it sounds right up my alley. It's officially on the hit list. Thanks for the feedback Mike. I love that fusion stuff that was going on. Agreed on the Tommy B comments above. Beck's version of Freeway Jam on the live record with Jan Hammer gives me even bigger goosebumps than the Blow by Blow take. Now can we only imagine if Jimi and Miles ever had gotten together in the studio like they had planned to? That would be seriously ridiculous.

Longtime fans will be pleased to see Jack stick to his distinctive style. He features a few friends on the album: Matt Costa, G. Love and Ben Harper. On shitty, cold Binghamton days, this album is perfect to remind you of childhood memories and warmer climes, so long as your blinds are closed.

On Sept. 18, Johnson and his band will perform an intimate benefit concert at The Republik in Honolulu, along with special guests Paula Fuga and John Cruz. All proceeds from the Songs For Maui album and The Republik show will benefit fire relief efforts and help provide ongoing support for Maui.

From his home in Los Angeles, Robert Carranza, the album's mixer and engineer, elaborates. "The whole focus of making this record was to simplify things. Even the process of using outboard gear was enormously simplified: there was hardly any. We trusted our instincts, and we had the good sense of not being bound by how people are making records right now. We did our own thing. We focused on feel, and so if something felt right, we went with it. Even when it came to mastering, we told Bernie Grundman that this record didn't need to be loud and that the acoustic songs should feel like acoustic songs and be less loud than the other songs. And it's interesting for people to see that a hit record can be made in such a very simple way!"

"So when I came back to the song, I simply put the faders back up, and then started with the lead vocal [21, below] and the live guitar [14]. I then added the vocal double, followed by the other instruments around it, and finally the rhythm section. The whole song took maybe four hours to mix! With this album, mixing was a matter of lining up the faders and listening constantly. I'd listen to a song four or five times, take a break, and listen again. I was aware that the tape was degrading with each playback, so the pressure was on. 'Static' was very easy to mix. Technically there's very little happening in it. My main concern was that the feeling came across. That's what I spent the most time on.

Tickets for the benefit concert at The Republik are $125 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at seetickets.us with a strict four-ticket limit per order. The album will be available digitally on Sept. 15 through Brushfire and Republic Records.

During the summer of 2022, Johnson went on tour, and I was fortunate enough to be one of the first people to hear his new album live! Hearing his songs in person was an incredible experience, and the concerts felt more like a relaxing guitar session with friends than an artist performing for a crowd. This mellow and positive feeling that his music exudes is what makes his work so unique. And, of course, it probably reminds everyone of the Curious George movie from our childhood. If you need a great addition to your spring and summer playlists, be sure to add some Jack Johnson songs!

Much in the way that throughout the 1990s actor Pauly Shore made only one kind of movie, Johnson is clearly content with churning out albums through his sunbeam machine that have begun to elicit the same eye-rolling, resigned response from many people outside of his specific, albeit large, core fan-base. No unexpected left-turns with pleasingly impactful results, no change of easy-breezy direction.

Johnson has been vocal about how this album displays his decision to include songs that are specifically about the ocean, as he has purposely steered-clear of the topic in his past offerings. Given that Johnson has always excelled at bright, poppy and swaying arrangements, the vibe of the ocean has been rather evident, regardless of whether a song was directly referring to the ocean, or not.

In response to the devastating fires that have recently swept over the Hawaiian island Maui, singer-songwriter Jack Johnson has stepped up to support fire relief efforts and provide ongoing aid to affected communities with a new live album titled Songs For Maui. Johnson, well-known for his strong ties to Hawaii and commitment to environmental and community causes, will drop the album on Sept. 15 and perform an intimate benefit concert two days after its release.

The album is three years in the making. Johnson first reached out to Perry in early 2020 in hopes he would produce the ambitious project. After a year-long pandemic pause, Perry began to flesh out several tracks from his studio in Jamaica.

The mellow surf folk of Jack Johnson can make you feel relaxed to the point where you listen to the lyrics and may miss the point completely. This happened to me with the song "Go On" from his most recent album "Sleep Between Static" released in early 2008. (Song from iMeem below is not the album version, YouTube Video is not the official video)

The song was on my iPod along with many other Jack Johnson tunes for my trip to Australia so when I picked up a Rolling Stone with Jack on the cover, I was surprised to read the story behind this song.

Jack and his family had cared for his wife's cousin Danny Riley, a 19 year old who died from a brain tumor in October of 2007. The album itself has a dedication "In Loving Memory to Danny Riley." In caring for him Jack found many parallels between caring for a dying loved one and raising his own children. "It's about learning how to let go of someone you love," he says, "watching them swim away."

As a father of toddlers, I could see so much how in raising them I am slowly having to let go, which parallels so much of what hospice tries to help teach families and patients as they face death and dying. After learning of the meaning behind this song, a young man I was caring for died. As the family was preparing for his funeral services, the songs dual meaning for parents losing their child seemed appropriate to suggest to them. They took the song and made a wonderful video tribute to him.

**UPDATE 7.21.2009** I was contacted by the family of Danny Riley and wanted to add his website www.dannyriley.com and note that they started a foundation ot help children with cancer through music appreciation and experience. Danny himself was a talented musician as you will find when you listen on the site.

Other songs on this album with palliative oriented lyrics include: "Adrift," "All at Once," "Monsoon" and "Losing Keys"

"Go On" by Jack Johnson from the album "Sleep Between the Static" (2008) from Brushfire Records.

Lyrics:

In my rear view I watch you

Watching the twilight behind the telephone lines

With nothing to prove or to assume

Just thinking that your thoughts are different than mine

In my rear view I watch you

I gave you your life, but you gave me mine

I see you slowly swim away

As the light is leaving town

To a place that I can't be

But there's no apologies

Just go on, Just go on

There are still so many things, I wanna to say to you

But go on, Just go on

We're bound by blood that's moving, the moment that we started

The moment that we started

I see perfect little eyes, watch the shadows of the clouds

And the surface of the ocean out the window of a plane

I get nervous when I fly I'm used to walking with my feet

Turbulence is like a sigh that I can't help but over think

What is the purpose of my life if it doesn't ever do

With learning to let it go live vicariously through

You can do the same it's the least you can do

Cause it's a lonely little chain if you don't add to it

So go on, just go on

There's so many things I wanna say to you

Go on, just go on

We're bound by blood and love from the moment that we start

Just go on, just go on

There are still so many things I wanna say to you

Just go on, just go on

We're bound by blood that's moving from the moment that we started

The moment that we started
