We don't publish your actual songs (so no one can steal them), only important registration information about them (your name, song titles, registration dates and numbers). To access that, click the "Find Songs" tab on our home page.

The $29.95 fee buys one Affidavit, which can hold up to 4 song files, whether you use all 4 song slots or not. So that single fee applies whether 1, 2, 3, or 4 songs are submitted together. (Songs submitted after the Affidavit is issued require a new Affidavit and new fee.)

The majority of songs registered online will appear in your Online Services Catalog and in Songview within 24 hours. Work registrations that require additional research may take up to 7 business days to become visible online.

BMI accepts registrations for works-for-hire. The company that hired you will normally own the copyright and be entitled to claim your publishing share. However, per BMI policy the writer, and not the company, must be listed as a composer/author on the registration. The only way for the company that commissioned you to receive your writer performance royalties would be through a royalty assignment. However, it is between you and the company to determine whether that is necessary.

A Performing Rights Organization (PRO) or CMO (Collective Management Organization) relies on song registration information to determine who they need to pay and exactly how much. Any mistakes or omissions put you at risk of having your hard-earned royalties withheld by collection societies, allocated to the wrong parties, or redistributed to top-earning creators as black-box income.

Incorrect song ownership information is one of the most common reasons copyright owners have their royalties withheld. If the information is inconsistent with prior registrations or inaccurate (e.g., your shares are over-claimed or add up to more than 100%), collection societies will hold onto the money until they are able to figure out who is entitled to what.

One of the best and easiest ways for all parties to know what percentage of a song they own is by completing a split sheet. That way, once it comes time to register the song, you know exactly who to include in the registration as well as what shares to allocate to them.

Including who else worked on a song and their ownership shares helps publishers and societies match the information when your co-writers register the same song. Should they not match, the registration will conflict and all payments will stop until the parties resolve the issue.

Songwriters can earn performance royalties when their songs are performed live in public. Submitting setlists to your collection society is key to getting those royalties. Generally, you should submit your setlists within six months of your performance and list the venue name, date, and all the songs performed.

This may seem like a lot of information to track and update every time something changes with your song, but the first step to maximizing your royalties is understanding how important a full and complete registration is for your catalog.

Once you join Songtrust, you should register songs directly into your account, and not with your Performing Rights Organization (PRO). This avoids potential matching or merging conflicts that could delay collections when we send in your registrations. The administration of any songs that were registered with your PRO before you joined Songtrust can be switched over to us once you add them to your Songtrust account.

The purpose of publishing administration is registration, maintenance, and royalty collection for your compositions. You begin by adding writers and songs into your account, then we take care of the rest, including sending your registrations to a network of more than 60 pay sources around the world.

Under the Copyright Act, a collective work is considered one work for purposes of registration. A registration for a collective work covers the copyrightable authorship in the selection, coordination, or arrangement of the work. A registration for a collective work covers the collective work as a whole and may cover the individual works contained in it if (1) the collective work and the individual works are owned by the same party, (2) the individual works have not been previously published or previously registered, and (3) the individual works are not in the public domain.

For example, an album that contains multiple sound recordings that embody multiple musical compositions is considered a collective work for purposes of registration. Typically, the party that owns the copyright in the sound recordings also owns the copyright in the album, because that party is usually responsible for creating the album as a whole. If that is the case, the album and the multiple sound recordings can be registered together on one application as a collective work (assuming the recordings have not been published or registered before).

*Please note: A classical aria is a song from an opera; an art song is vocal music composed or arranged for solo voice by a classical composer. They can be arrangements of folk songs or hymns, normally by classical composers. Our request that you submit an art song comes from our desire to hear the purity of your voice without ornamentation or stylistic choices which may hinder the vocal timbre. This means you should sing a song as simply and as straightforward as possible with vibrato if possible. No riffs, no scoops, no vocal growls or things that get in the way of the purity of the voice. Most of the composers who wrote operas also wrote art songs. It does not have to be in a foreign language, so it can be in English. Some classical composers who wrote English art songs might include Haydn, Handel, Purcell, Barber, Copeland, John Jacob Niles or Mark Hayes. Some folksongs or hymns which might work would be Oh Danny boy, Amazing Grace, or Shall we gather by the river.

License Fee: Each school music program - band, choir, orchestra - is required to pay a $30 license fee when registering students for TSSEC. This license fee is assessed by the contracted vendor that provides the online registration and scheduling system.

Most commonly songwriters will register an album of songs (i.e. one registration for the album as a whole) and thus pay one registration fee for the album. When submitting such a work, you would use the title for the whole album as the 'title of work' on the application form, but the registration would still be evidence of all the songs submitted under that registration number.

Online registration is cheaper and will provide immediate cover for your work. During the online process you will be asked to upload the files that make up your work (e.g. MP3 files, perhaps Word documents, PDF, image files, etc.). As a general rule, music projects are ideal for online registration as they tend to consist of relatively few files and are not exceptionally large, but if you have a project that consists of a lot of files, or large amounts of data, you should check out our upload advice page.

If, for example, you have already registered an album in progress (perhaps a few songs for the upcoming album), but now have more songs to submit under the SAME album, then you can add the new songs under that same registration using the update facility. The update form also provides the option to change the title of the whole registration (the title that appears on the certificate) if the album title changes.

There is a fee for updates, but it is far lower than a new registration - currently 21.25 if you submit online. For full details of how the update facility work, please see our fact sheet P-17: Updating copyright registrations.
