For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.

Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person's enemies will be those of his own household.

He shall judge between many peoples, and shall decide disputes for strong nations far away; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore;

Who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me.

And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall execute vengeance for the covenant. And if you gather within your cities, I will send pestilence among you, and you shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; behold, it descends for judgment upon Edom, upon the people I have devoted to destruction. The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood; it is gorged with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.

U will not find in e-sword an up-to-date background commentary (that is FREE). SPEND THE MONEY ON IVP background commentary Old Testament (recommended) and/or IVP background commentary NewTestament. Consult dictionaries, Bible Encyclopedias as well, STUDY BIBLES (niv, esv) for background

Unless, of course, they downloaded them from this site and were not using the installer, in which case they will be patiently waiting in their download directory along with the "exe" files. In that case, they will need to move the files to the e-sword directory manually.

I have been using e-sword for 10-15 years on windows pc, but I am going to move over to Linux Mint Cinnamon with my new computer. Am I going to be able to use e-sword on my Linux computer at all? I have seen that a program called "Wine" will enable Windows programs to work, but e-sword is probably bigger than most Windows apps. Is it feasible to download and/or use e-sword at all in Linux. Please advise asap as I will be buying my new computer very soon. Thanks in advance and God Bless!!!

I use a Debian 9 (Stretch} based Linux; e-sword works quite well with my version, I used PlayOnLinux to install since it was easier to load dependencies. Otherwise, you'll need Wine and Winetricks to load dependencies.

esword v10 to v12 runs on linux using WINE ,I recommend using playonlinux, or crossover and installing it inside a bottle, you can search for "how to install esword on linux" on youtube to know how to do it, anyway Beyond that there are other programs like Xiphos bible study or BibleTime, these I think you can install them from the repositories of your distro, they are similar but they use the modules in the-sword-project format.

If you are unable to get the Windows Media Player installed under WINE, then the last stable version of e-Sword on LINUX is version 12.2 which you can download here:

And Rick Meyers provides a download for e-Sword version 12.2  -sword.net/files/e-sword_1220_setup.exe

Paul expands upon the role of governments in today's passage, telling us that the government's vocation is to carry the sword and execute God's wrath on the wrongdoer (v. 4b). Among other things, this tells us that there is a division of labor between the state and the church in the new covenant era. Only the state has the right to take up arms in the punishment of the wicked. The church deals with the impenitent in its midst through the practice of church discipline, culminating in excommunication if necessary (Matt. 18:15-20; 1 Cor. 5). The church is not to exercise the punishment of physical force against heretics and recalcitrant sinners. On the other hand, the state's job is to use physical force against those who break the law. Christians may be called to work for the state as judges, police officers, lawmakers, soldiers, and so forth, and in that capacity they may bear the sword against wrongdoers. But the church herself has no right to bear the sword against her enemies.

Romans 13:4b also justifies the right use of capital punishment. Although many Christians have believed that the state may not execute people for offences such as murder, the Bible does not substantiate their position. Those who commit what we would refer to as first-degree murder must be executed, because murder is an attempt to destroy God's image (Gen. 9:5- 6). This heinous sin can be forgiven by God, but that does not mean we set aside its earthly consequences. Moreover, while we should do all that we can to make sure mistakes are not made in carrying out capital punishment, the fact that errors have occurred does not mean abolishing the death penalty is the answer. John Calvin comments, "If the Lord, by arming the magistrate, has also committed to him the use of the sword, whenever he visits the guilty with death, by executing God's vengeance, he obeys his commands. Contend then do they with God who think it unlawful to shed the blood of wicked men."

There is a division of labor between the state and the church. The state punishes evildoers with the sword, and the church preaches the gospel. The state may not do the church's job, and the church may not do the state's job. However, that does not mean the church may not speak to the state. In fact, the church is to be the conscience of the state, calling it to do its job of protecting human life and punishing criminals. 0852c4b9a8
