Meth (which is short for methamphetamine) is a stimulant narcotic substance that is very dangerous (completely different to an opiate such as heroin). Stimulant drugs make people feel more joyful and energetic, and that's why many people get addicted.
It's illegal to abuse, but that doesn't stop users from across the globe both buying and taking it. Learn about the deadly effects of methamphetamine here - and also how rehab centres can help cure an addiction to it.
Meth has quite a few names and forms, and all of them are illegal. The tablet form is often known as Yaba and the crystal form (which is smoke-able) is commonly known as Ice. It also has a powder form, too.
The powder can be snorted, the crystals smoked and the tablets swallowed, but they're all similar to each other in the way that they affect those who abuse them. In any form, meth can raise your heart rate and blood pressure - and this could cause a heart attack. Also, whilst people are high on meth, they are more likely to take risks and do things that they wouldn't normally do.
Although all the forms are similar, they aren't exactly same. The crystal form is purer and its ‘high’ is much more intense than the high of Yaba, or the powdered form. The effects of crystal meth also last longer, too. The high of Ice will usually last for 4 to 12 hours.
As well as short-term risks, there are long-term dangers that come with meth abuse, too.
Overdoses can damage an abuser's lungs and kidneys, cause them to have strokes and even kill them. Brain damage can also be caused by chronic meth abuse. All forms of meth are able to cause gastrointestinal damages, which can lead to coma and death.
Heavy and long term meth abuse also affects the addict mentally, too. The mental health issue psychosis can be caused and this can cause people to lose touch of what's real and what is fantasy.
All these risks can happen, but the chance of them happening can be increased significantly if meth is taken with alcohol.
