A huge quantity of books previously unavailable to the public was released starting in 2019 thanks to the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998. Because of an amendment to that act, works published between 1923 and 1977 can enter the public domain 95 years after their creation. Many of the sites listed below give access to the tens of thousands of books (plus movies, songs, and cartoons) available under this act. Downloads should be free and without retribution under U.S. copyright law.

ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom documented 1,247 demands to censor library books and resources in 2023. The number of titles targeted for censorship surged 65% in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching the highest levels ever documented by OIF in more than 20 years of tracking: 4,240 unique book titles were targeted for removal from schools and libraries. These are most challenged, including reasons cited for censoring the books.
Yet, Books on my iPhone would show the progress circle but make no progress. It is really frustrating when I have to search for the WLAN to download the books only to see some of the ebooks being "deleted" (cloud icon).
What is the problem? It is apparent the software issue that Apple fudged up recently and hadn't gotten around to fixing it. I have asked the Genius Bar about it. They instructed me to reboot the iPhone (which I did a several times after configuring). They instructed me to delete the ebooks then download them from iCloud (that would also delete ebooks on other devices).
I can't download any books/files I saved with iCloud in the Apple Books app on my Mac anymore (it worked before though). Books from the Apple Books store will download fine. I can also download all books saved in iCloud with iOS without problems.There is no error message, instead the Download will apparently start as indicated in the sidebar:
This seems to be related to the storage optimisation feature for iCloud (maybe it is somehow stuck or blocking these downloads). It can be found under System Preferences -> Apple ID -> Optimise Mac Storage. After turning the future off and on all downloads in Apple Books now work again.
If you would rather buy Haymarket ebooks for your device directly from Amazon, Apple, B&N, Google, or Sony, then they'll be delivered to by these providers with Digital Rights Management (DRM) applied. Ebooks purchased from other vendors will not be available on your Haymarket downloads page.
If you are using an Android phone or tablet you can open epub files in the Google Play Books app. In the app settings, tap to enable PDF uploading. Download the epub file from our website, or email it to yourself and save it to your downloads or files folder on your device. Find the file and Tap MoreOpen WithPlay Books or Upload to Play Books.
To read ebooks on a Windows desktop, you will first need to download an ebook-reading program, such as Adobe Digital Editions or Sumatra Reader. Once installed, you can download and open the epub file. If your ebook appears as a zip file it means that you have yet to download the necessary software to read it.
Thousands of magazine titles are available through the Digital Library of Illinois. Magazines do not count against the check-out limits for ebooks and eaudio and are always available. Read magazines in your browser or download the Libby app for offline reading. In addition to magazines in English, many are available in Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Russian.
When I sync Kindle Highlights in Obsidian, books that I have deleted from the Kindle Library and which also do not appear in Readwise continue to appear in Obsidian/Readwise/Books. If I delete the books from Readwise/Books by right-clicking and selecting delete, on the next sync the books return like zombies coming back from the dead.
Can someone please save me from madness and explain this phenomena and tell me how to get books to stop syncing/downloading into Obsidian when they have been deleted, both in Kindle and Obsidian, and do not appear in Readwise?
