We (G3ZME/P - Telford group) always take 2m talkback with us when portable. It's simply a multimode 2m SSB rig (eg FT857), and a small (2 or 5 ele) yagi with a short pole. I had zello here at home with me yesterday (low band contest), but gained no QSOs as a result. If it becomes the norm, it is likely to dilute activity as ops. won't know where to look first! ON4KST chat works fine 99% of the time, although it gets a bit screen-rolling when a Europe wide uW contest is running (like yesterday until 14:00 hrs). However, 2 metre talkback remains almost universal on bands 24GHz and up (144.390 MHz).
