A client has a word doc that is saved in dropbox shared folder. She simply opens the document and renames it creating a new file. The new file is then saved to the same location as the previous file. However, the new is blank. This has been happening intermittently over the past week. The user can ooen the file and saved it locally with an issue.

I have the exact same problem with one of my users on Windows 10 (last updates installed), Office 365 and DropBox (version 107.4.443). Open a Word document in a DropBox folder, save it under a different name in the same folder, and intermittently it will not save, without any warning.

the MS office app save the file desktop's synced Dropbox folder. the file is saved blank 0kb and yes it appears in Dropbox cloud... aslo blank with 0kb ... there is no version history ... there is no recovery document in Word.

Found this in searching for the exact same problem. Windows 10, Word 2019 Application, saves document from word (Save As) places in dropbox folder. Then goes back, document has 0KB blank document. Saving in other locations seem to work fine, But dropbox is the main saving location.

Same problem for me - wrote a 3000 word MS Word document last week. Saved to DB via the desktop app, using Windows 10 computer with Office 365 (fully up to date). Gone back in today and the file is 0kb with no version history. Saved 100s of files to DB previously without problem. Confusing . . .

You can control access to a document by implementing a password for it. Passwords are case-sensitive and can be a maximum of 15 characters long. Create a strong password, ideally one that you can easily remember. But in case you might forget, you should also keep a copy of it in a safe place.

If you lose or forget your document password, Word won't be able to recover it for you. It may be possible for your IT admins to help with password recovery, but only if they had implemented the DocRecrypt tool before you created the document password.

Word Online cannot password encrypt a document. Also, it cannot edit a password-encrypted document. To password protect a Word document, use Open in Word to open it in the desktop version of Word. Thereafter, you must use the Word desktop program to open and edit the document.

If you're concerned about people in your organization losing access to password-protected Microsoft 365 files, consider implementing the DocRecrypt tool. Note that DocRecrypt can only help to recover files that were encrypted after it was implemented. For more information see Remove or reset file passwords using DocRecrypt.

Thanks. Your explanation was helpful and should be added to easily accessible instructions on the website. If it's there I didn't see it before. (An instructional video might be useful too.) One caveat-- don't be surprised if you find the MS Word online formatting was a bit different from your original document eg: some tabs were deleted.

I am able to edit Excel files stored in Dropbox; however, Word documents say Read Only and state I need to say a copy of my original file to be able to edit it. I can't see anything different in the signin information or app settings within Word and Excel. Is this a known issue or do you have a suggestion in trouble shooting this issue?

I am trying to edit a Word document using the Android Word App on my Samsung S10+. I have also tried to edit using the Office app on my Samsung. I have a Personal Microsoft.com OneDrive account. I am not a member of a Dropbox Buisness Team.

Hi I am looking for a way that I can export to a word document. I work on a local magazine published in several different areas. One of the features of the magazine is a list of local clubs and societies. We currently just have the list in Word which we then copy and paste the relevant parts each month into our design package. As we cover 7 areas and some of the clubs cover both areas every time we make a change we have to check 7 word files to make the change in each. There must be an easier way! I was hoping I could create a database with all the info and export the info to be printed onto a word document but can only see that I can do this to a CSV file which is no good for then placing into the magazine. Any help would be appreciated

For example, if my survey has 100 single choice questions with the answer "Yes" or "No", I would like Survey123 to only pull 5 of the questions with the answer "Yes" into a word document. The remaining questions are answered "No" but I do not need them in my word document.

I am a student and need to upload my assignments in word document form (.doc not .docx). Usually at the top of the assignment it states the submission type as doc, but the assignment I am incurring an issue with has it listed as "word". I have tried to save my submission a number of different ways and nothing is accepted. Can you please let me know what is accepted when the format is solely listed as "word" or if this is something the instructor needs to address on their side of the assignment. Thank you!

When you say that your instructor has the word "word" in the "File Types" area, is that what you are referring to? If so, then your instructor has configured part of this assignment incorrectly. Your instructor should be listing the file extensions (doc, docx, pdf, rtf, etc.) and not the actual software used to create those files. And, I'm not sure why he would only accept *.doc files...as it's more rare now to see that file extension with Microsoft Word documents.

My instructor has a whole bunch of problems on his end too it's like he doesn't even know how to access it, it just says "word" under file types and I've tried every way I believe I can to submit it and Its just not accepting.

It sounds like your instructor is not understanding how to specify acceptable files types for your assignment. Your instructor should not be specifying the software application (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.). Rather, your instructor should be adding the acceptable file types that those software applications use. For example, if your instructor wants you to submit a Microsoft Word document, your instructor would add docx and maybe even the older doc file extensions (two of the common Microsoft Word file types) in the configuration options for the assignment. When your instructor enters "word", the he's telling Canvas that for this assignment, it will only accept a file with the *.word file extension...which is not what I'm assuming is the real intent. I'd recommend reaching out to your instructor as soon as possible to let him/her know that settings for this assignment need to be revisited so that you and your classmates can successfully submit the document for grading. You can contact your instructor by following the informaiton in this Guide:

My experience with submitting assignments using Canvas or Moodle is, that if it is a final MLA essay or anything similar, it is usually rejected no matter what input or output you put into it - and is thus considered to be unwanted. The solution to such problems is to simply stop asking students to submit written documents using Canvas or Moodle which the teacher might not really want to receive. The teacher might want it but deep down, the subject matter is undesired as an end product and results in a poor grade. Constantly giving the same students low grades for simply trying to submit MLA or related documents results in no new lesson learned. My experiences with Canvas and Moodle have been best when submitting files as video essays rather than as written assignments or documents. The reason for why is, because written essays are becoming less and less wanted these days and making a video is easier and more practical. If students want specifically to submit MLA, APA or Chicago style documents they should do that on their own terms, and no middle man or teacher required. They should submit that to editors or others for review, rather than by using a platforms submission feature. When it comes to Canvas or Moodle, I recommend submitting video files. It is the best, safest and most up - to date method and usually results in better grades than trying to overcomplicate things. Best wishes from sgeir in Iceland.

I take it you are looking at the file properties of a document in File Explorer? When I do that for a file I have edited today, I see a "revision number" property. I am not sure what that number means. I know that it doesn't imply the presence of backups, though.
