Have you tried file roller ? It's installed by default in Ubuntu (not sure about Ubuntu Mate, so.....) ; It's a graphical tool for extracting and compacting files and works by right clicking ,just as winrar in windows.

Tracked as CVE-2021-35052, the bug impacts the trial version of the software running version 5.70. "This vulnerability allows an attacker to intercept and modify requests sent to the user of the application," Positive Technologies' Igor Sak-Sakovskiy said in a technical write-up. "This can be used to achieve remote code execution (RCE) on a victim's computer."

Sak-Sakovskiy noted that an investigation into WinRAR began after observing a JavaScript error rendered by MSHTML (aka Trident), a proprietary browser engine for the now-discontinued Internet Explorer and which is used in Office to render web content inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, leading to the discovery that the error window is displayed once every three times when the application is launched post the expiry of the trial.

On top of that, an attacker already having access to the same network domain can stage ARP spoofing attacks to remotely launch applications, retrieve local host information, and even run arbitrary code.

phrakture: yeah tried 7zip, can't remember the "register me now" msg's but that might have been because i cracked it... I still prefferred winrar because of it's handy right click a file(s) and be able to access lots of cool unpacking options feature. Unlike with file-roller you have to open each file separately.

phrakture: yes as i recall it does, but there was 2 features 7zip didn't have that winrar did have which i wanted. I'm still talking about the right click menu on files here. Hello, I am new here, and I just wanted to share my way of "creating" my portable apps using WinRAR's SFX option. Now before you say that WinRAR doesn't make portable apps, I understand that; that is why I put quotes around the word created. I am not really creating a portable app, I am simply creating a wrapper around an application that is already stealth. I use this method over the portable apps here for the following reasons:

First, download your portable app. This could be Notepad++ or CCleaner: it does not matter. Then, download WinRAR (if you don't have it) and BeCyIconGrabber (simply search it with Google or DuckDuckGo). Use BeCyIconGrabber to extract the icon from the exe of the portable app, and keep it for later. Now, modify your apps; adding plugins, changing settings, etc. when you are done, open up WinRAR and drag your application files to WinRAR. Use the following settings (these are what I use):

That updated version of the application, WinRAR 6.23, also contains fixes for several other flaws, including WinRAR starting on a wrong file if a user double-clicked an item in a specially crafted archive. Other minor changes include the immediate deletion of temporary files created when extracting or testing multiple archives.

The libraries unrar.dll and unrar64.dll, used by third-party applications, are also vulnerable. While some applications have released updates to resolve the issue, others are still using older versions of the library files, which remain vulnerable.

Administrators and home users may want to run searches for the two library files on their devices, or check the directories of applications that use the files specifically, to find out if patched versions are installed.

The latest update date may also provide clues regarding the vulnerability. If the last update has been released before August 2, 2023, the library files are likely vulnerable. Opening RAR archives in these third-party applications may therefore also fall pray to attacks targeting the vulnerability.

NOTE: If you have a license for WinRAR, be sure to back up the rarreg.key or rarreg.txt file in the C:\Program Files\WinRAR folder, in case you need to reinstall later on.

WinRAR works like any typical Windows application, so the removal is handled in the same fashion as most Windows programs. It is NOT recommended that you simply delete the WinRAR program folder, as this does not remove the application properly.
