The simulators consist of route and session editors called Surveyor, and a Driver module that loads a route and lets the player operate and watch the trains run in either "DCC" mode, which simulates a bare-bones Digital Command Control (DCC) system for the simple stop-and-go of a basic model railway, or "CAB" mode, which simulates real-world physics and adds working cab controls.

The simulators are supported by a large library of freeware assets which can be downloaded from the N3V servers, referred to as the Download Station (DLS). Unless users purchase a First Class Ticket with real money, download speeds for the DLS (both in Content Manager and directly through File Transfer Protocol on the Trainz website) are throttled, which tends to be a point of contention in the Trainz community. PaintShed is a simple program for aiding and easing the process of 'reskinning' traincars, altering their livery, by recoloring and adding new heraldry to Trainz locomotives and other rolling stock. The Content Manager (CM) module is a Windows program that allows management of the in-game database files. It was renamed under the name of Content Manager Plus (CMP) in TRS2006.

My First Trainz Set was designed for the younger generation who do not want to worry about realism or management when playing the Trainz game. The game features 4 locations to lay track in that are based on rooms throughout a house, such as a bedroom or kitchen. The user has the ability to place down small toy-like objects in the replacement of buildings and scenery. However, its graphical quality of the trains, track, and objects is still very much like that of the standard Trainz simulator games. Controls are also far more simplified. The game was also ported to Android devices.

Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022 (TRS22) is the result of 20 years of development, making Trainz the longest running train simulator in the world.

We've come a long long way and more and more people are discovering there's more to a train sim than just driving trains!

With user-friendly world building tools, trains lets you build and operate your own railroad - and now you can build and drive online with friends!

So I've never seen the point of train simulators as I thought you just drive around in a pre-set train in the pre-set world. But then my friend mentioned you can make your own routes, buildings, cities, outcroppings, basically entire world. And suddenly it's a lot more exciting to imagine if I can actually make train route between places that are complex and interesting in their own right. Especially if it's possible to make tube-style underground metro's too (if that's a thing).

Doing some research, I can find that Trainz seems to have the most customisability of the simulators, so sounds like the best fit. But there seems to be three versions now - ANE, 2019 and 2022. ANE is significantly cheaper than 2022, and I don't mind a higher price if it's really worth it enough, though it might be better to get a cheaper one to see if I enjoy it? Which has the best experience value? Will I miss out from getting ANE? What about the planinum editions and annual subscriptions. I'm afraid of getting it and finding I don't have enough assets to make something exciting.

The one clip that initially fooled me was the train pulling out of the Park Avenue Tunnel. I saw the Model As moving in the background and at first thought it was historical footage and wondered if it had been colorized. It was only after I saw the other scenes that I realized it had all been created with the simulator.

I toured a BNSF training facility in Overland Park, Kansas back then and they were using a pro-version of train simulator for training operating crews. It was pretty convincing and the "cab" was on a gimbal system that tilted on the curves and if you applied the brakes it tilted forward to give you the feel of "G force" as ther train slowed. Pretty sophisticated stuff. At that time I think they had about 85% of the BNSF system recorded and they could pull up any division and simulate all the grades, geography and signal systems.

The TrainZ Simulator is pretty good if you simply enjoy watching a train roll by, or being the engineer along the preplanned routes. It's known for its "eye candy". For "serious" train simulation Run 8 is a vastly superior simulator. It's a sandbox style world with regions for Southern California, Donner Pass, A-Line in Florida and Georgia, and Central New York around Selkirk. I own, and use the SoCal region. The SoCal BNSF routes extend from LA through Needles to Seligman, AZ to the east, and to Fresno to the north via Barstow, Mojave, Cajon Pass (UP trackage rights) to Bakersfield and back to BNSF to Fresno. The UP routes include the Alhambra Sub, the Palmdale cutoff to Mojave and on to Bakersfield over Tehachapi Pass. There's also the UP Lone Pine Branch and the Trona Railroad.

My April 1957 timetable indicates the 20th Century Limited ran on a 14 hour, 45 minute schedule from New York to Chicago. It left Grand Central Terminal promptly at 6:00pm ET and was scheduled to arrive in Chicago the next morning at 7:45am CT. The train always had top priority and stops were limited to make sure it stayed on schedule. Going eastbound it left LaSalle Street Station at 3:45pm CT and arrived at GCT at 9:00am. This is for the dieselized 20th Century Limited which didn't need to stop for coal or slow down to scoop water from the track pans. The simulator shows the 1939 schedule for the steam powered 20th Century which I believe was on a 16 hour schedule. I'm not sure but I think that left GCT at 5:00pm.

I've closed the MacroWorks 3.1 window, but the RailDriver still isn't working with my other simulator.

MacroWorks 3.1 is not completely turned off when you close the programming window. To shut it down completely, you will need to either right-click on the system tray icon and select 'Exit', or open up the programming window and go to 'File' > 'Exit'. When you do this you will get a box asking you to confirm shutting down the software, and you must choose 'Yes' to completely shut down the software.

In this assignment you will write a program to control two trains. The purposeis to write the program so that the trains move relatively independently of eachother, but without colliding. Instead of a real railway, we have a simulator, where one can control the speeds of trains and change rail switches. Thesimulator gives a signal when a train passes sensors suitably placed on thetracks. It is part of the assignment to decide where sensors should be placed togive sufficient information for your program. The map without sensors looks asfollows.

You are not able to give a speed which implies that a train changesdirection. To change direction the train must first be stopped (by giving itspeed 0). There is no signal from the simulator to tell you when the train hasstopped, so you will need to wait a suitable time before changing direction.

The simulator and your program run as separate OS processes. They use pipes tocommunicate. The Main class provided in the skeleton code takes care of joining together the pipes of your solution in Java with the tsim simulator.

All commands between the your program and the simulator are sentline-by-line as text strings, as you saw above. To aid you in yourassignment we provide you with a Java library (TSim) that implementsthe protocol tsim is using. You must use this Java library. Thepackage provides you with an interface to control the behaviour of thetrains and switches. You can view the JavaDoc documentation of this libraryhere.

You should implement your solution in the Lab1.java file.We provide a Main class which takes care of loading the simulator and connecting it to your solution. You shouldn't need to change this file. This entry point expects at least 3 command line arguments:

For testing, run multiple instances of the simulator (at a high simulationspeed), with different train speeds for a long time. e.g. Test your trains withthe first going very fast and the second going very slow, and viceversa. Don't set the simulation speed too high (--speed switch should beabout 15 or higher), since the trains might not get commands from your programon time. ff782bc1db
