Authentic paper textures in Illustrator? It can be done with Phantom Paper. You'll find a diverse range of paper textures in this pack, including chipboard, cotton rag, kraft paper, recycled pulp, and tabloid paper. Whatever your creative vision may be, Phantom Paper has the perfect texture to help bring it to life.

This industrial-strength collection of brushes, swatches, textures, and templates will help you achieve the cheap comic effects of your dreams with ease. ColorLab makes achieving these retro archival effects easy and fun.

How do you achieve the textures on the right side of the mountain, where the noise seems to leave the shape. Is there a gradient applied, because there's slight differences in colors in places. And on the moon, how do you make it look like rough brush strokes?

Illustrator gets easily overloaded if you have something this complex as vectors. Every grain must be an object. You may create them with sprayers, scatter brushes and by tracing raster images which contain noise, but finally you still have 100000 objects instead of a few megapixel bitmap image.Try at first to make the textures in Photoshop. If you have resolution high enough you can use them in Illustrator as raster images without making them vectors.

NOTE: Noise and Dissolve are poor substitutes for real grainy textures. You can for ex. scratch some patterns onto paper with a grey pencil or other tool. After scanning them you can adjust contrast and colorize them.

Very unlikely to do that in Illustrator, however Adobe has recently released the Fresco app which is specifically aimed at producing more realistic drawing and painting textures, beyond current Illustrator/Photoshop capabilities, so you may want to try this:

A much better option would be to convert the layers with the Raster image textures to PSD files. The challenge is the size. You need to figure out what size these files need to be. If you start out with an AI canvas that is 1920 X 1080 because you are working on an HD project, and the full body of your character fills the frame you are only OK if you are always going to show your character's full body. If you want to push in on the character at some point to create a head and shoulders shot then you need a bigger artboard.

The easiest workflow is to create your Illustration on an artboard that is the same size as the video frame, then scale up the illustration so that it looks like the closeup you need in your final edited animation. When the character is properly framed for its closeup you resize the artboard to include the entire character, separate the illustration into layers so it is easily animated, then, in almost every case involving bitmap textures, export the AI file to Photoshop so that the vector data that can foul up AE if it gets too complicated, is turned into pixels.

Depending on the texture you are applying to the layer it might be more efficient to just import the textures, use a blend mode and use the AI layer as a track matte. I've done that kind of thing a lot. I'm working on a vector animation right now for a documentary that has gradient fills on a lot of vector layers and I'm just adding the textures using blend modes and Set Matte or Track matte to get them to overlay properly on the graphics.

I am making an infographic. I want to be able to show white graphic-texture over an imported image. Yet the basic graphic textures are all black. I am hoping I can make them white to stand out over the dark image.

This is my very first time I have actually met struggle with Illustrator so here is a question - How do I actually bend or apply decorations/textures to isometric or any other 3D object so it actually looks like its part of it? Here is an example of icon I am trying to design with 0 success so far.

Lets you quickly and easily add one or more raster-based textures as a live effect to filled paths, live text, gradient meshes and raster objects. Intuitive annotation controls let you quickly change a texture's scale, rotation, opacity, and blending mode. An "Autocover" feature ensures that a texture will completely cover an object, even if it is edited. Textures can be set as "repeating", meaning they will be automatically tiled to fill the object.

A comprehensive set of high quality repeating, non-repeating and grunge textures installs automatically with Texturino. Additional free and original textures are made available via your Astute Graphics account page. Plus, you can easily import your own PNG images to use as textures!

At its most basic, adding a texture effect can make your design more interesting, but used purposefully and with a lot of thought, textures can transform artwork into something deeper and more meaningful.

Texture effects for Photoshop and textures for Illustrator are really popular graphic project inclusions. They can be used to add a vintage twist to a photograph or to make a design appear grungier or more distressed. You could think of background textures as a sort of flexible filter.

The Poster Studio is a pack of textures for Photoshop with 32 to choose from, carefully captured from real folds and creases. There are also 6 seamless pattern overlays included, as well as a set of torn paper brushes and 10 tape pieces.

A set of paint textures for Photoshop and Illustrator, this set is great for making artistic backgrounds for graphics, business cards, invitations and much more. Just add a texture and choose a color scheme to suit your project.

20 unique grunge designs to be used as Photoshop brushes. Add a vintage, worn feel to any design or artwork by mixing textures and colors. The download includes a bonus PSD file with the original scans that you can use to create your own cool textures for Photoshop.

These cool textures for Photoshop are in the style of traditional printing, with all the quirks and grunginess that make it so realistic. There are 19 layer styles and over 80 high-resolution textures.

A set of poster themed textures for Illustrator, this pack includes 11 frame brushes, 12 texture patterns, 12 one-click graphic styles and even a quick reference guide and instructions to help you get started.

We all agree your theory is crazy, but is it crazy enough? RE: Stone Texture carlow (TechnicalUser)29 Apr 05 14:36hi,

Well all things went ok till you placed the photoshop stone texture.

When you import pixels, they stay pixels. So resizing the log will give a inevitable, loss of quality. No way around.

Wait for CS 2 where you can vectorize an image and then scale it. Vectorizing has not the same quality (question of the pixels) as the orignal pixel image.

So there is no perfect workaround, it's trying and trying, and trying.

Sorry, I Have no other answers

Have you tried Effect>Texture? With the texturizer tool, you can apply images as textures to objects. You could choose a pre-made stone texture, or manufacture your own in PS, make sure it tiles properly, and use that (browse from the texturizer dialog box). Fiddle with scaling to make it fit on different size objects.

BTW I would manually produce the block rather than using the finnicky and inaccurate 3-d tools in CS.

www.amenpackaging.com RE: Stone Texture AShock (TechnicalUser)29 Apr 05 15:32My two cents...

If you have your steps recorded in an action in Photoshop, you might be able to work your way through them in Illustrator (you'll need to get creative...you can't simply import actions from Photoshop to Illustrator as far as I can tell)...you'll find some tools are not available...I can't find Noise, but Texturizer has about the same capabilities.

Then once you have the stone set, you can just save the settings as a Graphic Style in Illustrator and apply to anything as needed. Just make sure you save the new style in a Graphic Style Library to access it from other documents.

As far as which program is best for the job, with Illustrator all edges are always going to be sharp. You can increase the size of your image a ton and the edges will remain crisp...because it's vector based. :)

Hope this helps.

itchybug, You say you can apply images as textures to objects. If I use an image (which is raster), won't it stay raster?

How do you all do logos if you want to combine vector with raster look? Jim Lunde

Yes it's raster, but you can make it high res and scale down for use in Illustrator. Also, if you use correct tiling, you could keep the image small and still have good resolution. Keep in mind, that when you apply a texture to a fill, you can make the edges of your object sharp by applying a stroke (make sure you apply the texture only to the fill). Bert Philippus
