"Uprising" is a song by the English rock band Muse. It was released on 4 August 2009 as the lead single from the band's fifth studio album, The Resistance (2009). The song was written by band member Matt Bellamy, produced by the band, and mixed by Spike Stent.[1] "Uprising" peaked at number 37 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and peaked in the top 10 in seven countries. It was certified platinum in the United Kingdom, gold in four countries, platinum in five countries, and double-platinum in the United States, making it Muse's best-selling single. The song is based on the 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, written by George Orwell.[2]

"Uprising" was described as an alternative rock,[3] space rock,[4] and glam rock song,[5] with elements of industrial.[6] It is composed in the key of D minor with a tempo of 132 beats per minute.[7] Several critics likened it to the theme music from the science fiction TV show Doctor Who.[8] Muse produced "Uprising" themselves.[9]

"Uprising" won Best Single at the 2010 Music Producers Guild Awards.[9] Accepting the award, the songwriter, Matt Bellamy, said: "We produced something!" He thanked John Leckie, the producer of their first two albums, for "teaching us how to produce".[9]

After being released to radio in the United States, the single reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart on 9 September 2009,[11] becoming Muse's sixth top 10 single and first number one on that chart, eventually spending 17 weeks at number one, becoming the second longest-running number one song ever on the chart (now third longest). It also became one of three songs at the time to almost concurrently break the 52-week record held by 30 Seconds to Mars' "The Kill", Red Jumpsuit Apparatus's "Face Down", and Finger Eleven's "Paralyzer". As songs on the chart are retired for charting out of the top 10 beyond week 52, it was initially removed for a week after logging its 52nd week for missing the top 10. However, the following week it gained enough points to return to the top 10, returning it to the chart for a 53rd week, which would mark its final tally. In 2013, it was ranked the top song of all time in the magazine's 25th anniversary list of the top 100 songs to grace the chart;[12] an updated ranking for the chart's 35th anniversary in late 2023 saw "Uprising" drop to number three, after the success of All Time Low's "Monsters" and Lovelytheband's "Broken" in the late 2010s and early 2020s.[13][14] It became Muse's first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 (and first top 40 single), peaking at number 37 on the week ending 3 October 2009 and spent 20 weeks on the Hot 100. It remains the band's only top 40 single. It has sold 2,170,000 copies in the US as of April 2013[update].[15]

Described as a "heavy rock take on Goldfrapp" in Mojo magazine, and features football-style chanting. Matt Bellamy describes it as a protest song about the banking situation.[4] In the 25th July issue of NME Magazine, Uprising was described as "singing, over a Marilyn Manson-style electro-glam stomp."

Uprising has become one of the band's hugest successes and, because of this, has been performed at nearly every gig since its introduction in 2009. During The Resistance tour it was often proceeded by We Are The Universe, with this intro later being replaced by Unsustainable during The 2nd Law tour and [JFK] for the Drones Festival Tour. When performing live in China in 2015, Uprising was deemed too politically dangerous to perform, and it was skipped as a result. This was the first time since 2009 that the song was deliberately skipped from the setlist.

If we look at the tone when can see how the song gets its sci-fi feeling. Looking at the opening song, the instrument playing almost sounds alien. It gives the song a very sci-fi feel. The instrument is very hi-pitched with an unnatural sound to them. However the drums playing keeps a steady beat to help ground the song.

The Third Eye, IMO, represents the interconnectedness of all things - consider the TOOL song of the same name where Bill Hicks says "All matter is really energy condensed to a slow vibration - we are all one consciousness experiencing itself - there is no such thing as death - life is but a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves."

To be honest, It wasnt my favorite on the Resistance, and it wasn't my least favorite. If Im listing to all my Muse songs on shuffle, Im most likely to hit "next" when it comes on. So id say its just an average song.

The beauty of the song is you can take it as serious as you want and interpret it in different ways. If its a piss take, then cool, its cheesy in places and works like that. If you want it to be a geniune protest theme, I think it works like that, the bass/synth combo is very dark.

Considering that this is the song that Matt chooses to give Gary Glitter a run for his money with his light-up shades, shiny suits, reflective toys and OTT gesticulation/flamboyance in performance; AND the song in which monstrous, evil, gigantic teddy bears take over the world... then, yeah, it's srs bsns!

I do take the message of Uprising seriously but for different reasons than the original poster. I know that Matt's phrasing "Open your third eye" has it's root in conspiracy theory but, to me, the whole song is about rising above false consciousness. False consciousness is a well known neo-Marxist concept regarding Capitalist delusion. From Matt's interviews he appears to be thinking along these lines, thinking about the the effects of a corporatecrasy and the delusion that we have a democracy, rather than some weird fantasy that the OP is alluding to.

The only problem I have with Uprising and many of Muse's songs, is the idea of revolution through blood shed, which goes against what they actually say in interview. I suppose they think it makes for more passionate rock. Afterall how can you make a good rock song out of constitutional reform? I like the passion though. We need that passion I think, if there is ever going to be any chance of reform.

The numbers are just my method of cataloging and tracking how many times I posted or revised a song. The lowest number reflects that this song is one of the first two dozen that I transcribed and posted to the forum in 09/2016.

One of my bands is learning Uprising by Muse. Fun tune, lots of synths! I have the parts figured out, easy enough, but Im having some problems identifying the character of the lead synth that occurs shortly after the song starts. What type of waveform are you hearing? I dont thing its purely a saw, perhas a combination of saw and square/pulse width? Part of the problem is the lead is either bathed in reverb or MIDIed with another airy/stringy synth with a longer tail or release, not sure. Also hearing some portamento and vibrato.

First of all, it really sounds like a 2 oscillator synth with the filter open. Perhaps it's a bass using a synth pedal. Then it makes me think that it's a synth bass because of the filter sweep in the middle of the song.

Actually, I remember reading an interview in which Chris Wolstenhome (the bassist) said that they wanted to use a 100% bass sound without any mixed synth (as they used in Time is Running Out and other songs). I can't find the link anymore...

He is known for his very precise playing and sound quality. He uses a bunch of great and rare pedals. One of them is the Akai Deep Impact which is indeed a synth effect pedal, so maybe it has been used on this track, but I am pretty sure he didn't sequence the line and mixed it with a hard/soft synth !

It means that Muse is not a fan of tyranny or forced control into the collective (social justice) but rather believes that we must rise up to face it AND fight it, in the name of our personal liberty. I know that the UK has a long history of social control and tyranny and we are just now learning to love it here in the US. I think this song is directed here (as is very trendy with UK and Aussie bands...at least when Bush was pres). Regarding the fat cats line; You could interpret as directed towards big business or capitalism but they are out for profits, not outright control over every detail of the peoples lives. That kind of power and control over the citizens is the mainstay of large central government and the bubble-dwelling elitists that manipulate it. I would think he is directing that towards the establishment fat cats (read as: barney frank/nancy pelosi/chris dodd/harry reid and yes even the chosen one himself). I would add some republicans in there as well but since they aren't in power at this time and haven't really been in the last 3 years...I would say this anti-tyranny song is most likely directed at the current over-reaching, power grabbing, liberty destroying control whores currently running the show both here and abroad. The ones telling us every day to shut up, sit down and get down with the progressive landslide that is swallowing us up whole. I may be personalizing too much to assume it is geared towards the US, as it is equally applicable to the current socialist agenda in the UK and the rest of Europe (no you can't have that breast cancer treatment, because we can't provide it to everybody...take two aspirin and call me when you reach stage 4, we have some great suicide drugs that provide ample savings). However, I have to ask myself where they plan to make more money on touring and cd/ipod sales...here or in the UK. Marketing 101.

Oh my God, factfreak, I love ya!! You said it all perfectly...it's just perfect. The very first time I heard this song, the line that caught my ear was "They will not force us". Of course, interpretation is left to the individual...and like you, that is exactly where my mind went - the "unprecedented" power trip that is going down in D.C. Each time I heard the song, I really focused to see if the rest of the lyrics fit my theory. The only line I questioned was the 'fat cats' one...but believe it or not, even then I "chose" to interpret it as the clowns in Congress. What a disgrace they are. Geez, you posted this in August, you probably won't even see my reply. I think we might need to discuss further - it's always good to find like-minded people.
