Also, it appears that there is no solution for kies on linux. I don't know anything about kies, but the standard Android app development method should work just fine and there's plenty of documentation at the developer site.
I have an old samsung galaxyGT-P1000 7.1 tablet and I need to transfer my photos from t to my laptop but not having any success with samsung kies It tells me to save it then double click and follow on screen instructions but all that happens is I get a popup progress bar which stayed like this for hours I have tried several times without sucess. I used to have it OK on an old laptop.

If you have Mountain Lion, the software will not install. Samsung apparently has put too restrictive a test for the OS version into their installer. It might be possible to extract the components of the installer package and place them manually (you'll need Pacifist) but there might be other compatibility problems. You'll probably have to wait for Samsung to release an update that will install on ML.
I did that each time but I think Kies is just very temperamental and unstable. In the end I used Revo Uninstaller and then ran CCleaner to fix the registry issues and managed then to get a clean install.

I bought a samsung tab on 16th march 2011. Initially i was happy, but when i tried conecting it to Kies is when all the trouble began, The kies software on installation promptly tells you that an update is available & you end up downloading it and being confident that you are having an amazing hardware & software to use. but the stupid kies software does not recognise the hardware. it always shows connecting & post that nothing happens. i have called up samsung helpline on two days & both the days they said that their technical team is busy & someone will call. Nothing has happened till date.
I have been a Blackberry user & the ease with which data, music, apps & other software can be downloaded is simply amazing.
I have got stuck with this crap as of now.
Shame on Samsung to give out hardware without software support or customer care.
