Need for Speed: Nitro is an arcade style racing game that emphasizes speed and excitement over realism and vehicle tuning. The Wii version allows up to four players to race, with a maximum of eight racers at once. The Wii version lets up to four racers compete in drag races, too.

Events feature different modes, namely circuits, team circuits, elimination races, drift challenges, speed trap challenges, drag challenges and time attacks. Career mode allows players to compete in several cups and build up a roster of vehicles, while Arcade Mode lets players immediately jump into a race with customized difficulty and race conditions. During races, police will attempt to block and ram racers, causing damage that will reduce the players' top speed and amount of nitro available. Police are not in drag races. The game features power-up icons in the race that immediately repair vehicle damage or increase your opponents' police heat level. During a race, players are awarded "style points" based on performing powerslides and drafting, and nitro is recharged over time. There is small nitro and powerful nitro similar to the Wii version of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

The five cities that in which are in the game are Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,[6] Cairo, Egypt[7] Madrid, Spain,[8] Singapore,[9] and Dubai, UAE[10] (and San Diego in the DS version). Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the final city that players will race through in the career. It features some of the most difficult courses, including construction sites (such as large buildings and an unfinished bridge) and high-speed highways.

A series of five police badges appear on the upper-right corner of the player's screen. They signify the player's Heat Level. Hitting traffic, criminal damage, speeding, driving on the sidewalk, and ramming police cars can increase the player's Heat Level. The police can become more aggressive towards a racer with a high Heat Level.

When I scroll in Nitro I barely move my fingers on the touchpad and it jumps half or more of a page. In MS Word (or all other applications), if I barely move my fingers (i.e. same amount of distance as Nitro) its moves like 1 row of text. Other applications you can use move your fingers slow/fast, and do "flip" scrolling to adjust the scroll speed. Not with Nitro, its on 100% full speed all the time.

At this time, we do not have an option to change the scrolling speed. You can however change the page view from Single Page to Continuous to potentially make the scrolling slower. The options should be located on the bottom-right of the Nitro Pro window on the orange bar. You can switch between views to see if what works best for your scrolling.

The art style is the first thing you'll notice in Nitro, and it's an overly cartoony style with exaggerated cars, characters, and locales. It is silky smooth and aesthetically pleasing, with a pretty amazing sense of speed that is emboldened by the consistent framerate. One of the cool graphical touches is the graffiti that you can customize for each car; whoever is in first place will paint the areas it passes, which makes the drive for first place even more powerful.

At your disposal are a nitrous boost, which slowly builds up as you race, and two different items that you can pick up on the course. One sics the cops on the nearest car ahead of you, while the other will repair your car instantly. The items are plentiful, but the fact that there are only two different ones makes them less fun; this game isn't exactly Mario Kart in that regard. Cops are all around in this game as you race the streets of various cities. You build up a star rating if you recklessly drive, and the cops will go after you if you have the highest star rating of the pack.

The race types salvage that issue a bit, though. Outside of the straightforward race, there are also Elimination races where the last place racer is eliminated every 30 seconds; Drift Challenges, where you have to drift a certain amount in a race and get to the finish; Acceleration Challenges, where you have to speed up and shift gears with precision while avoiding other cars, and more.

Need for Speed: Nitro looks awesome, sounds great, and controls well. It's just a little light on content. The groundwork is all there, but the limited palette of races and the Arcade mode need some help. Still, this is a great racing title that will hopefully see an improved sequel down the line.

Small issues & lack of online aside, I've been loving this game. Mario Kart Wii has been collecting dust since this came out. 


Surprised you didn't mention the poor camera angle as a con, especially when you hit the nitro.

Need for Speed: Nitro is not an intimidating racer, which should come as a relief if you're not a diehard racing fan. The controls are responsive and simple to master, regardless of which controller option you choose. Practically every setup imaginable is supported: the Wii Remote (one-handed steering by pointing the Wii Remote forward and twisting it left or right); the Wii Remote and Nunchuk (steer with the Nunchuk); the Wii Wheel; the Wii Classic Controller; or the GameCube controller. The game supports up to four players, in both Arcade and Career modes, so you can have four different people playing with four different controllers. Besides the standard go-and-stop moves, you can execute a nitro boost a la Burnout by shaking the Wii Remote, and you can drift by tapping the brake.

Of course, there's also the competitive aspect of the game, which is just as fun, albeit in short bursts. The game's star-based progress system is pretty standard but well executed: it's suitably hard but not impossible. The race types are standard Need for Speed: circuit, elimination, drag races, drift challenge, time attack, and speed trap. Progressing through each location is a matter of completing all the events and acquiring the required number of stars to unlock the next city. However, within each event there are three or more stars to be won by doing different things: for example, you can race in a circuit event and aim to come in first, second, or third for three stars, two stars, or one star, respectively. You can then go back to the same event and forget about placement (since you've already got those stars) and focus on something else--you can acquire a star for drifting successfully and another star for clocking a lap under 1 minute 15 seconds. One good thing about this system is that it gives you an incentive to play the same event more than once, and to spend more time at each location. After you achieve a certain number of stars, you will be able to unlock new cars, customization options, and new locations.

The varied customization options help to save the game from total repetitiveness. You spend a good chunk of time playing around with the designs--even though the cars are rated in terms of speed, acceleration, handling, strength, and drift, you can make only aesthetic changes to them. You can choose from dozens of colours and stickers, or customize your own. Placing them on the car is simply a matter of pointing the Wii Remote on the spot where you want them to go. Different brushes can be unlocked throughout gameplay, so those who believe strongly in their artistic abilities can also free-form paint all over their car if they so wish. But the best part of the whole process is a quirky design concept that works brilliantly for this type of game: you have the option to customize how the trackside buildings appear when you're racing. Again, you can pick from dozens of graffiti designs and stickers, which will first appear on the showroom walls so you can get a feel for what you've picked. During the race, your designs will appear on the buildings around you, but only when you take the lead--a sort of triumphant tribute to your personal style.

Need for Speed: Nitro is a good-looking game that boasts a dizzying sense of speed at all the right moments. You're afforded plenty of opportunities to leave your mark on the tracks with a good dose of interesting gameplay that is, for the most part, a lot of fun. It's unfortunate that the gameplay isn't more varied, but this is still a good, accessible arcade racer.

With this you get the standard Arcade or Career modes, and race types in each comprised of our good friends Circuit, Elimination, Drag Races and Time Attack, as well as Speed Trap, which, as you might recall from past NFS titles, means having to clock up unfeasibly fast speeds through a series of three checkpoints.
