The American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has appeared in 61 music videos, 13 of which she self-directed. She has released five documentaries, acted in a number of films and television shows, and directed a concert documentary and short film.
Swift's first music video was for her debut single "Tim McGraw", from her 2006 self-titled debut studio album. It was directed by Trey Fanjoy, who worked on award-winning music videos for Swift's singles from 2006 to 2009. The music video for "Our Song" won Video of the Year at the 2008 CMT Music Awards. Swift's second studio album, Fearless (2008), was supported by the music videos for "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me". In 2009, the former won Video of the Year at both the CMT Music Awards and the Country Music Association Awards, and the latter won Best Female Video at the MTV Video Music Awards. Swift's first self-directed music video was for her 2010 album Speak Now's lead single, "Mine", which she directed with Roman White.[1]

Swift's fourth studio album, Red (2012), was supported by the Anthony Mandler-directed music video for "I Knew You Were Trouble", which won Best Female Video at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.[2] Joseph Kahn directed award-winning music videos for singles from Swift's fifth studio album, 1989 (2014). At the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, "Blank Space" and "Bad Blood" featuring rapper Kendrick Lamar won four awards, including Video of the Year for the latter.[3] "Bad Blood" also won the Grammy Award for Best Music Video.[4] Kahn further directed the music video for singles from Swift's sixth studio album Reputation (2017), including for the lead single "Look What You Made Me Do", which broke several online viewing records.[5]
David Bowie's video for the 1980 single "Ashes to Ashes" was the first music video to exceed this sum. Janet Jackson and Britney Spears have six videos each on the list, while Michael Jackson and Ayumi Hamasaki have five each. Madonna has made three appearances in the top five, and five total, making her the artist with the most expensive videos of all time combined. TLC, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, Guns N' Roses, Mylne Farmer and MC Hammer appear on the list twice.
Joseph Kahn has directed seven, Paul Hunter has directed four, while Hype Williams, Cha Eun Taek and Wataru Takeishi have directed three. Nigel Dick, Mark Romanek and John Landis appear twice, the latter with videos both for Michael Jackson. This list only includes music videos with an announced or reported budget.
Romanek, who made Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream", which was claimed to be one of the most expensive music videos ever made, has since denied this claim, saying that there were two other music videos from the same era which cost "millions more" than "Scream".[1] In a 2017 interview, Mick Garris, a writer for Michael Jackson's Ghosts stated that after several years of production development for the Ghosts short film: "It became the most expensive music video ever made...it ended up coming in at about $15 million, all of it out of Michael's pocket."[2]
"Music videos play a key role in hooking you: Taking you from being a listener to leaning in and becoming a fan," Charlie Hellman, Spotify's vice president and head of music product, said in a release. "They're an important part of so many artists' tool kits, and it's a natural fit for them to live in the same place that more than half a billion people choose to listen to music."
Spotify says it's starting out with a smaller catalog of artists, including Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat and Ice Spice. CNET also found music videos from Taylor Swift, Beyonc, SZA, Olivia Rodrigo, Jack Harlow and Tate McRae.
The addition of music videos pits Spotify against YouTube, which has dominated the music video scene for almost two decades. YouTube Music also offers listeners the option to toggle between audio and music videos. Music streaming competitor Apple Music has a section for watching an artist's music videos, too.
Spotify's superpower is its user base; the company says it has more than 602 million users, which includes 236 million paid subscribers. YouTube Music and YouTube's paid Premium tier, by comparison, has 100 million subscribers. But the perk of the baseline YouTube app and site is that you can watch music videos for free (you may just need to sit through some ads if you don't subscribe to Premium).

The timing of this feature release is interesting, as Universal Music Group pulled out its songs from TikTok following a dispute over royalties. With music videos, Spotify is adding more video content to its app, beyond Clips (short videos of artists talking to fans) and Canvas (looping album artworks).
