In an interview with Sound on Sound, Ari Levine explained how they came up with the song "[It] was a very tough song to write, even though it is so simple. That song began one day when we were hanging around the studio and hadn't written a song for a few days and we were kind of burnt out and didn't feel like working. We felt lazy. 'K'naan' was in the studio with us, and the four of us suddenly came up with this idea." He added, "After that we had a really hard time getting the groove and the drums to sit right. Once you have one piece of the puzzle, like when you realise that a drum track is good, you can add other things in after that."[1] Bruno Mars affirmed that they were trying to be "magical and historic" thus creating a track "that was better than the Beatles". Due to the frustration of not being able to do so, Mars said "Today I don't feel like doing anything at all", which according to him was an eye-opener.[2] In 2013, on the GQ Cover Story, the artist revealed that he didn't like the song.[3]

This particular track has a Sublime-ish, Pacific ska flair, complete with a ukulele and everything. (Thanks,Train, for bringing that back.) Mraz's track "I'm Yours" alsocomes to mind.

But this one has both of those songs beat on at least one front: The lyrics, while, indeed, quite lazy, are rife with perishable cultural references. I somehow doubt that lines about Snuggies and P90X will hold upover time. Consider this: If Bruno wrote a song referring to theSobakawa cloud pillow, Tae-Bo and the Macarena, would you still listento it? 

Plus, if you're working out and doing P90x, aren't you kind of doing something?Isn't that the whole premise of their infomercials?

Meanwhile, the video for "The Lazy Song" follows a pseudo-viral video theme, cribbing from OK Go's playbook of thrifty, choreographed, single-cutvideos. Yet, Bruno's video doesn't have any cool tricks like dogs withbuckets or treadmills. Comparatively, it's just a lazy attempt.

So lazy, in fact, that I'm gonna spite it by getting up and doing something today. Take that, Mars.

Todd (VO): First and foremost, let's make it clear that "The Lazy Song" is, in fact, a lazy song, perhaps one of the laziest I've ever heard. Bruno Mars either put no effort into this, or he put a lot of effort making it seem like he put no effort into this. It's a song about doing nothing and all of the nothing he's gonna do. The video? It's probably the stupidest thing I've ever seen in my life, but it's also probably the only video possible for a song this aggressively, hatefully worthless. [through teeth] This is not what music should be about.

Todd: Bruno Mars isn't being lazy to avoid work, he's being lazy to avoid dignity. Man, and I thought the [clip from...] pathetic meanness of "Grenade" had already stripped him of any dignity he had, but that was before he wrote a song basically about how he can't take the burden of not picking his nose and eating it in front of people.
