I wanted to present the way kids see things, but without all this baggage, this morality that these old middle aged Hollywood guys bring to it. Kids don't think that way...they're living in the moment not thinking about anything beyond that and that's what I wanted to catch.

In Kids, Clark cast New York City "street" kids with no previous acting experience, notably Leo Fitzpatrick (Telly) and Justin Pierce (Casper). Clark originally decided he wanted to cast Fitzpatrick in a film after watching him skateboard in New York, and cursing when he could not land certain tricks. Korine had met Chlo Sevigny in New York before production began on Kids, and initially cast her in a small role as one of the girls in the swimming pool. She then was given the leading role of Jennie when the actress hired to play Jennie, Mia Kirshner, was fired. Sevigny and Korine went on to make Gummo (1997) and Julien Donkey-Boy (1999) together. Korine makes a cameo in the club scene with Jennie, as the kid wearing Coke-bottle glasses and a Nuclear Assault shirt who gives her drugs, though the part is credited to his brother Avi.

But it is not all good news. The risk of babies being born at a low weight continues to rise, racial inequities remain systemic and stubbornly persistent and 12% of kids across the country are still growing up in areas of concentrated poverty.

More than a million youth across the United States are not in school or working. At the state level, kids in West Virginia were most likely to fit this statistic: 11% were out of school and unemployed in 2017.

In 2017, 67% of eighth-graders in American public schools scored below proficient in math. Despite slight improvements for African-American and Latino students, this statistic raises concerns for kids of color. For example: 87% of African-American kids, 81% of American Indian kids and 80% of Latino kids tested below proficient in math.

Over the past three decades, educational attainment has improved for parents across the country. Yet in 2017, 31% of Latino kids had no parent who held a high school diploma. Just 5% of white children fit this same statistic.

Across the nation, 12% of children (8.5 million kids) live in high-poverty areas. Locally, this statistic varies widely: Just 1% of kids in Wyoming are growing up amid concentrated poverty while 84% of kids in Puerto Rico call a high-poverty area home.
