From K-pop to K-grub to K-beauty, there are tons of reasons why Korea is loved by many. If you don't feel like bumping shoulders with the crowd this weekend, consider turning to one of these Korean variety shows instead. They'll have you glued to the screen while trying to catch a breath from all the side-splitting action. Scroll down and start binging.

Just like what it says on the tin, the show takes its members around the country for two days and one night to explore beautiful towns, villages, and sights under various themes. Of course, it wouldn't truly be a Korean variety show without some cruel but hilarious games that, should the members fail, would leave them unfed, jumping into frozen lakes, and sleeping in cardboard boxes in the middle of winter. If you love travelling and getting to know local culture, this is the show for you.

Where do I even begin with this one? New Journey to the West is one of those shows that are just plain hilarious. Inspired by the famous Chinese novel Journey to the West, the show's premise revolves around the seven mystical Dragon Balls that have landed in different places on Earth (the story of how it happened differs every season). The cast must travel around the world to retrieve them through a series of games and challenges that shows just how ruthlessly competitive the cast members are. To top it off, each season is divided into different themes where the cast has to dress up in ridiculous costumes that have nothing to do with the show. Have you ever seen a panda, the Statue of Liberty, and Santa having dinner together?

Combining escape rooms and mind-boggling puzzles with mysterious storylines, jumpscares, plot twists, and six hilarious celebrities (who are all way too jumpy for their own good), Great Escape has the ultimate recipe for a successful variety show. Whether it's escaping the zombie apocalypse, killing demonic entities in a psych ward, or finding their way out of a haunted mansion in complete darkness, the show will keep you on your toes every episode.

Much like Netflix's other popular K-variety show, Busted!, New World is not for everyone as the scripted parts can sometimes feel disingenuous, which takes away the fun of seeing celebs being thrown into 'real' situations like most variety shows on this list. That being said, the whole concept of New World is rather refreshing and with variety show veterans like Lee Seung-gi, Eun Ji-won, Park Na-rae, and Kim Hee-chul holding down the fort, you're guaranteed a good laugh.

Little to no experience watching any Korean reality shows. My only exposure would probably be through K-Pop (Idol) focused shows or interview-esque clips on YouTube. Any manageable/digestable shows that are easy to get into? Would be helpful if available on Netflix/Viki.

First question, should user flairs just be for shows, or would members like cast members listed too?

Or something else members would like.

If both show & cast, since I don't really know what members would like, please list the show & cast member, if needed.

We have a great subreddit wiki, where you can find a lot of info and links for several shows, a list of hangul names for shows, a list for KBS World's variety shows playlists, and more.

KBS World: The international broadcasting service of KBS. It airs selected shows with subtitles about a week after they air in Korea. Available in over 52 countries. Here is a list of their variety show playlists.

VIU: A licensed free-to-stream website, which locks their newest content for 72 hours for premium users. All their content is available for free after 72 hours. VIU is available in Singapore, with some of its content also available in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong & India. Subs most Korean variety very quickly.

Get-Dramas: Handy website for checking what legal streaming services are available in your country. It's focused on dramas, but a lot of websites that offer dramas will also have variety shows available.

So I used to watch a shit ton of these shows, especially when I first started getting into K-pop. But now, it's quite hard for me to watch them or go through the whole duration. I feel like shows back then were a lot more... real? People's reactions were more genuine, or at least more credible compared to what we see today. But there were definitely some old shows that also came off as fake the same way.

Not saying that the shows today are bad; many of their content and ideas are actually interesting and refreshing. But the over-the-top reactions are far-fetched and it's painfully obvious how fake they are most of the times. It feels like a complete bogus. I know it's to get screen-time and more attention, but it's so unnecessary and hard to watch. I find myself skipping through many parts of variety shows because of this reason. The least they could do is make it more believable and appropriate.

It has been like 3-4 weeks since I started watching Korean variety shows. I first came across a clip of Jessi's Showterview and found it to be hilarious. I eventually found almost all the episodes on YouTube and began to binge watch them and I enjoyed almost all of the interviews.

So I decided to ask on this sub. I know that there's a panel that has info about Korean shows but I want to ask for recommendations where the vibe is like Showterview (when it was hosted by Jessi) and like Sixth Sense. Anything with idols or actors from Korea as guests would be great. Also anything with Yoo Jae-Suk / Jessi / Jeon So-Min / Lee Mi-Joo / Oh Na-Ra would be good... or well any recommendations in general.

Edit (19 Jan 2024): I wanted to thank everyone who posted on the thread, I thought I should just post an update to say thank you to everyone for the help and all the suggestions given. There's so much I still have to check out on YT to get the vibe of some shows but I know on the top of my list are Hangout With Yoo, Running Man, Adventure By Accident, New Journey To The West. I will definitely look up all the other suggestions as well. So thank you again guys!

The show combines elements of reality, variety, and educational programming, creating a delightful mix of entertainment and learning. As the apprentices immerse themselves in different professions, viewers are treated to an insightful and often humorous exploration of traditional and modern skills.

On the other hand, if you turn on a Korean variety show you will hear people talking over each other the same way you do at your kitchen table. People interrupt each other to ask questions. Or perhaps they get excited and burst in with their own thoughts before the first person is done speaking.

Since Korean variety shows feature such natural conversation, it can also be an excellent way to expand your vocabulary. In particular, if you pick an episode that deals with things that are of interest to you already (music, cooking, hobbies, etc), you will naturally be able to learn words you would want to use in your daily life.

I love watching Korean variety shows. The ones I like the most are often high energy and funny. I enjoy imagining how I would answer the questions being asked or playing the games to really get an immersive experience.

Running Man has been on the air since 2010 and has almost 700 episodes so I guarantee you can fill up a lot of time with this variety show if you like the style. It features competitions in the form of games and missions. They also regularly have celebrity guests on the show.

The basic setting is a classroom environment with the hosts and the guests posing as students. Part of the show features an interview with the guests. The rest of the episode can feature talent shows, games, or improv.

Watching Korean TV shows can be a very useful supplement for Korean learners because some of the TV shows are very entertaining, and will give you opportunity to learn phrases that are commonly used in Korea. Moreover, watching TV shows with subtitles in Korean will certainly help you improve your vocabulary and your ability to understand the language. Today, KoreanClass101 will introduce ten famous Korean TV shows to help you learn Korean effectively.

Each South Korean TV show has its unique style. Therefore, depending on your interests, you can improve your vocabularies and expressions from TV shows. For example, if you want to understand how Koreans tease each other and want to learn more about Korean humor, watching Radio Star may help you meet your goals.

Theseason 1 of this docu-variety show featured actors RyuJunYeol and Lee JeHoon backpacking in Cuba. They did everything from arrangingtheir transportation, accommodation and itinerary. Their purpose was to findtheir true self, so they will narrate their experience, from what they see, feel and perceive. Season 2 is composed of Ahn Jaehong, Kang Haneul and OngSeongwu traveling to Argentina. They showed activities to do and places tovisit in a particular city or destination, including their encounters with thelocals.

Unlike other shows, this travel TV show features veteran actors, some of them in their 70s. They go on trips abroad and feature the various attractions of the places while the members inject their stories and humor. The last run of the show had Lee Soonjae, Shin Goo, Park Guenhyung Baek Ilseob, Lee Seojin, and Kim Yonggun as its members. They feature attractions that may be of interest to viewers, particularly those in their ripe age.

Actors Lee Sunkyun,Kim Namgil, Lee Sangyeob, Kim Minsik and Ko Gyupil traveled across Russia bytaking the Trans-Siberian Railway. It often shows the sights outside but mostof the scenes were taken inside the train. One might wonder what to show while spendingmost of the time indoors, but the cast made it interesting, even giving hintsas what one can do while cooped inside a moving vehicle for hours.

There are more Korean variety shows that have travel as one of their main themes. I have watched Street Food Fighter featuring Chef Baek Jongwon, Exciting India featuring K-pop stars, and other TV programs that brought me around Korea and beyond. Some of them, including those in the list above, are no longer airing but they can still be viewed online. There were episodes that have inspired me to visit a particular destination and landmark or put something in my must-visit or must-do list. I also picked certain travel tips along the way. 0852c4b9a8
