We have an annual tradition of doing a Christmas window painting that began back when we started using A Year of Playing Skillfully from The Homegrown Preschooler, and it has become something we look forward to all year long.

We try to avoid using paper towels in our house, but this is one project that deserves its own roll. I fill a few spray bottles with dish soap and water and let the kids spray and wipe. A looooot of spraying and wiping.

I love how some kids got really messy, while others stayed perfectly clean! It was also interesting to me that each kid had their own certain style. After they were all dried and I hung them up, I could pick out who did what without seeing their names on the back. Developing their artistic style early! So cool.

If you want to get a jumpstart on supplies you can visit my Amazon store! There is a great starter kit of paints from Apple Barrel, brushes and cleaner! I also highly recommend getting a mixed media pad so they can practice! You can read all about my favorite painting supplies here.

Today, I welcome Varya from Creative World of Varya for a post about teaching the impasto technique to kids. This is such a fun process art activity. I know I am planning on doing this with my girls very soon. I think they will love it! Thanks to Varya, and I hope you hop over to her page to see what else she has to offer on her blog about the creative development of children!

Despite not being a great artist myself, I believe that introducing your child to art skills, like painting and drawing, is very important. You can read about Four Things to Remember when Raising an Artist on my blog; this was actually one of my first blog posts.

This is how I have naturally come to explore Impasto technique, and I think it is my most favorite way of painting. Of course, I am far from comparing my simple creations with Rembrandt, but Impasto is actually perfect for young children who are just learning to work with acrylic and oil paints. Moreover, this technique gives immense room for creativity and helps the child practice fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

1. Introduce your child to different sizes of brushes. Talk about painting, and if it is the first time for your child to paint, introduce some paintings on famous artists who painted with Impasto technique (Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Titian).

This is a REALLY fun outdoor activity for kids of all ages!! It is inexpensive, not too messy, and perfect for those times when someone says "I'm bored!" It never gets old either....we have done this over and over again, and its still just as fun!

What you'll need:

Washable tempera paint (I prefer Crayola brand)

Empty spray bottles (you can get these at any craft store or the dollar store)

Blank white stretched canvases (I buy them in bulk at the craft store when they are on sale)

Plastic kiddie pool (one per child is ideal)

What to do:

 1. Fill your spray bottles with the washable tempera paint. Don't try to use glitter paint. We did, and it immediately clogged the spray bottle. Add glitter at the end if you must.

 2. Lay your plastic kiddie pool on the grass.

 3. Put your blank white canvas inside the pool. (You could also use poster board if you didn't have canvas.)

 4. Give your kid(s) the spray bottles. They will know EXACTLY what to do!

Why I love this:

 1. I like outdoor activities, and this one is great because you can decide to be in the sun or the shade. Whatever you prefer, you are outside in the fresh air.

 2. Using spray bottles is fantastic for building up the muscles in little kids hands for writing.

 3. The artwork always turns out beautiful!! We use the stretched canvas because I always display these in our "art gallery."

 4. For little kids, its a fun way to spend time with Mom or Dad....working on a "project" together.

 5. The mess is COMPLETELY contained with no cleanup! Its amazing. We use the pool exclusively for outdoor painting, so it never has to be cleaned. We have other pools for swimming, etc...but this one is just for painting.

 6. These make really great gifts for kids to give parents/grandparents etc. (Use smaller 8x10" stretched canvas)

I used to recommend painting the beds before assembling. But I've since had a friend paint her son's bed. She had a natural bed and left it like that for awhile, so when she decided to paint it was already assembled so she just painted it that way! And she said it was super easy so that's what I recommend now. But I'll give you some tips for both!

If you're painting before assembling, start by painting 3 sides and allowing them to dry the amount of time suggested on the paint can. Then flip all of the pieces over and paint the last side. I suggest at least 2 coats of paint. So you'll do these steps twice.

Take note though that the longer you wait, the more time the paint will have to fully cure and therefore the more durable it will be! She also talks in that article about how it will put off less chemicals when the paint is fully dry. So plan on painting ahead of time if you're worried about this!

The right choice for you is whatever is best for your family! So feel free to research further and definitely check out that first article I linked above for a more detailed description about painting kids furniture!

Introducing painting lessons for the first time to children can feel overwhelming. However with some tips from a seasoned art teacher you can produce successful first time painting lessons and have fun. First time paint lessons can encourage a child to start picking up painting more often and be rewarding.

In this blog I want to start with the best tips for setting up paint materials, paint environment, and basic painting lessons you can start with. This will also work if you have no painting experience. You will have a chance to practice and quickly gain paint skills to guide young children. These tips will ensure a successful experience for both you and student.

Prepare a painting workspace on a flat sturdy surface children can easily work around. I recommend this over a slanted paint easle. I discuss this more in my books and video trainings why first time painters should paint on a flat surface.

Provide projects that are more about exploring paint and experimenting. Children need plenty of time to learn how paint works and what its possibilities are. Do not expect young children to start painting realistic pictures or be able to copy paintings. Your projects should be fun and open to their ideas and experiments.

There are so many thing children can paint on. Using different surfaces gives children more opprotunties to practice the skill of painting. If you need more ideas of what children can paint on check my books Kids Painting or Early Childhood Art Guide, you will get lots of inspiration. You can also check out all my art blog post. I share lots of ideas on how I teach chidlren how to paint for the first time using all kinds of surfaces.

The first lessons you should teach children is brushstrokes. Then how to blend paint colors, moving into how to mix primary into secondary colors (Color Theory) how to make lines, textures, and paint solid areas. Painting very basic shapes. You can also focus on just painting textures. Allow time for each child to explore while painting. Be open minded and encouraging of all artworks presented. I have a beginner PAINTING CURRICULUM focused on learning brushstrokes you can check out HERE. This is great for a teacher or homeschooling family. Here are some great blogs to start with:

The best advice I can teach you here is to really focus on teaching children how to set-up and clean up painting activities. When his is mastered, you can allow for more painting lessons with ease. So be sure to demonstrate how to clean-up all tools and the art space after painting projects to older children capable of helping. You will feel more confident bringing out painting lessons to your students. If you would like to know more about teaching children painting join my weekly art NEWSLETTER HERE

We did this song as our instrument play-along, after we handed out egg shakers and maracas. I asked the kids to suggest things they might see outside the window for each verse. We had a blue ocean, a purple tree, a yellow bird, and a green dinosaur.

This process art activity was so easy, and the kids had a great time. I put out bowls of tempera paint (with three different colors in each bowl), along with some pom-poms of different sizes, and paper.

There are so many benefits to art and painting in general, but when it comes to toddlers and beginning artists, having the freedom to decide on their own techniques and create whatever they want has some great benefits.

This is one of those art activities that we save for warmer weather. Then the mess is less stressful, and the kids can have all the fun they want. And cleanup is easy. Keep everything contained on a tray or hose the kids down with water afterwards.

We use our foam paint for sensory play mostly. I set out some animals, dinosaurs, or transportation vehicles and let my kids paint. (This usually leads to painting their whole bodies so I keep them minimally dressed for this project.)

The kids popped the cakes out the the container and then broke them into little pieces with a hammer. This was my sons favorite part:) They placed our in a baggie to try and contain all the broken pieces.

Also, when purchasing paint for a Squishmallow portrait painting, I have found it easiest to purchase heavy body acrylic because of the full coverage. Obviously paint choice is up to you, but having the kids do only one coat of paint makes the project go much faster. If you want more information on the different types of acrylic paint and why some act differently than others, check out my acrylic paint guide. I used small condiment cups and had the kids keep the lids on even when they finished painting in case touch ups were needed. Lastly, I did not allow any mixing of colors. I wanted to keep the process streamlined, so I photographed the squishmallows before buying paint so that I knew exactly which colors to buy. With the heavy body acrylic paint, a little goes a long way! 0852c4b9a8
