there isn't much more detail to go into. here's a brush that uses CMYK black in an RGB document. I dragged it out of the brushes palette. it consists of a shape with black fills and a no stroke/no fill rectangle. I select the black-filled shape with the white arrow and change it to RGB black.

i then select the whole group with the black arrow, and drag-drop it over the original in the Brushes palette while holding alt (note: NOT the brush library -- use the document brushes palette). the brush creation dialogue will open. i click OK, and it asks me if I want to apply this new brush definition to existing strokes.

I'm trying to find out if there's any methods for creating decorative borders quickly & easily. I'm looking for something that's quicker than duplicating individual elements and moving them around. Although I can decorate a border by manually organizing graphic elements, I wish there was a more automatic & less tedious way to do it, so that I can create something faster.

Take a look at the image I have attached. The decorative border I created is just simple repeating semi-circles. I created it by duplicating the semi-circle many times. But I wonder if there are any faster, easier & more effective ways to create decorative borders. The border that I created using this method isn't perfect, since some of semi-circles didn't fully fit inside the border and some ended up overlapping one another. Also, even though this is a decorative border, it's not a very complicated one, and the process would be even more tedious if I decided to go with a more complex border.

While this video is showing how to use Illustrator brushes to create ornamental frames in Illustrator, maybe this process can also be applied to Affinity Designer too, but I'm not sure. Can this be done with Affinity Designer brushes? If yes, are there any tutorials you would recommend on this?

One thing I'm a little confused about when applying decorative brushes to shapes in Affinity Designer is that the brush doesn't fully close the shape. For example, you used the Cloud shape, but the brush effect isn't applied to the entire the shape, so the ends look tapered. I want to find a way to avoid this with my shapes because I need the brush stroke to be uniform throughout the shape, and I want my shape to be closed.

Did you tried it out with some more suitable/usable decorative brush motives? I didn't had any such brushes installed, thus my used brush example above shown, might not be a very good one for such purposes here.

Another way to do this would be to use a font that allows you to create decorative borders, for example Baroque Borders, National Currency, and there are many others. This is not the quickest solution as there is sometimes a bit of work in the settings to get the corners to match perfectly.

Indesign has only limited option for strokes which you can access from the strokes panel (Window - Strokes) and you can only apply a specific pattern of Custom strokes which fall under three categories - Stripe , dotted , dash. If you really want to add a custom border around a text frame, then one workaround would be to use Type on a path tool and place a bordered Glyph or similar things around. This is what you can try -custom-borders-type-path.php .

Yeah, I'm familiar with these "jimmy-rig" techniques, but they are limited and wonky. I must admit it's almost laughable that I can do paw print strokes but I can't create custom strokes using brushes. I'm not designing amateur newsletters for the local dog shelter. I also know this is not the right place to voice complaints and you are just offering the only help that's available.

I am designing a menu on InDesign which will be used as a template and updated by other people (and I have no control over their level of design experience). As the menu items in the restaurant change, the rules and boxes I am designing now may be resized (or new ones may be added). It is unreasonable in this company's workflow to ask them to go re-draw boxes and lines with the correct brush on an illustrator file every time they need to make these changes. If InDesign can apply a footprint texture to a stroke, surely it can do more with strokes than it currently does. It would be very helpful to be able to create (or import) other textures for InDesign strokes.

The way I usually create custom borders is with the pattern brush. Read up on it in the manual, then load the pattern brush swatches to look at how those were created. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.
