My conversion to the Mennonite church began with a cookbook. In my early twenties, I taught at a school in the Dominican Republic. Although our midday meal was cooked by a Dominican woman, we were responsible for making our own suppers in the school kitchen. One evening, while looking for a recipe to make mayonnaise for my tuna-salad sandwich, I grabbed the More-With-Less Cookbook off the shelf, found the recipe, made the mayo, and then began reading the introductory section while eating the sandwich.

As I later discovered, Longacre married her husband, John, in 1963, and together they decided to serve with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a relief and development organization. They served in Vietnam and Indonesia but eventually returned to the MCC headquarters in Akron, Pennsylvania, after Doris developed health issues. In Akron, they both worked as staff for the Food and Hunger Concerns desk, and it was while working together on the emerging food crisis of the early 1970s that Doris envisioned her book, the More-With-Less Cookbook.

The congregants were not dressed and made up to impress one another like at my childhood church. Posters and signs encouraging people to volunteer at the local soup kitchen were displayed above the church literature table. Someone distributed a Lent calendar of activities from Bread for the World. The pastor did not close the service with an altar call. And for the first time in my life, a young woman, a seminary intern, offered me communion. After a few weeks of visiting that church, I asked the pastor how I could buy a copy of the More-With-Less Cookbook, and he gave me the contact information for the Mennonite Publishing House. At last, my own copy and a home congregation.

My copy of the cookbook also includes faded recipes that I have plucked from other sources. There is a black bean soup recipe from the Los Angeles Times. Recipes from friends or family, often written on recycled printer paper, are folded into the back of the book. The Creamy Orange-Ginger Dressing recipe is written on the back side of a bibliography sheet that includes Pornography: Men Possessing Women by Andrea Dworkin and Gyn/ecology: The Metaethics of Radical Feminism with a New Intergalatic Introduction by Mary Daly. I am amused by the juxtaposition.

In cases when it is a simple variable that is cleaner. But with more complex expressions that you only want evaluated once, it requires storing it in a variable to do that. After a little while doing FP and Kotlin you get to the point where it just feels dirty to actually create a named local variable.

Rather than giving up completely, I managed to feel good about finding a few things to donate. I repeated this process weekly, and while some may say it was tedious operation, it worked for me. This method allowed me to be productive on a pace that I was comfortable with.

After months of consistent effort, I began feeling much lighter. I no longer had an attachment to physical items. It brought me so much peace to look around my space and be greeted with items that actually enhanced and added value to my life.

The feeling of living with less was empowering because I realized just how little I needed to be happy. In fact, my first trip to the mall since my decluttering session was an enlightening experience. I went from impulse shopping to window shopping. It became easier to say no to buying new things and being mindful of my spending.

Research design and methods:  Patients with a discharge diagnosis of diabetes (ICD-9 code 250.x) and HbA1c>9% who were hospitalized between 2008 and 2010 were retrospectively identified. All-cause first readmissions were determined within 30 days and 180 days after discharge. IDE was conducted by a certified diabetes educator or trainee. Relationships between IDE and hospital readmission were analyzed with stepwise backward logistic regression models.

Results:  In all, 2,265 patients were included in the 30-day analysis and 2,069 patients were included in the 180-day analysis. Patients who received IDE had a lower frequency of readmission within 30 days than did those who did not (11 vs. 16%; P=0.0001). This relationship persisted after adjustment for sociodemographic and illness-related factors (odds ratio 0.66 [95% CI 0.51-0.85]; P=0.001). Medicaid insurance and longer stay were also independent predictors in this model. IDE was also associated with reduced readmissions within 180 days, although the relationship was attenuated. In the final 180-day model, no IDE, African American race, Medicaid or Medicare insurance, longer stay, and lower HbA1c were independently associated with increased hospital readmission. Further analysis determined that higher HbA1c was associated with lower frequency of readmission only among patients who received a diabetes education consult.

Conclusions:  Formal IDE was independently associated with a lower frequency of all-cause hospital readmission within 30 days; this relationship was attenuated by 180 days. Prospective studies are needed to confirm this association.

The co-authors found that contact center agents with access to a conversational assistant saw a 14% boost in productivity, with the largest gains impacting new or low-skilled workers. In other words, the workers were upskilled, not replaced, thanks to the technology.

Generative AI is the latest in a line of technologies to disrupt the workplace. Computers that can complete data entry, bookkeeping, and basic assembly-line tasks have been replacing or augmenting workers for decades. More recently, computerization has streamlined research and analysis, helping workers do more in less time.

Average contact centers have much room for improvement, the researchers write. Supervisors can spend up to 20 hours each week training low performers. Improvement comes from experience, which often means dealing with stressed-out customers. This can lead to employee burnout and extraordinarily high turnover; annually, up to 60% of contact center workers leave, and companies spend as much as $20,000 to replace each employee.

That gives generative AI models access to a large training data set, which can be used to provide agents with recommended responses to common customer questions or links to relevant product documentation.

Workers using the generative AI model increased the number of customer chats resolved per hour by 13.8%, the researchers found. Within two months, they were resolving 2.5 chats per hour, compared with 1.7 for colleagues not using the model, who needed eight months to hit the higher threshold. In addition, workers using the AI model spent an average of 35 minutes on each chat, compared with 40 minutes for their colleagues who lacked a model. (These figures also account for the fact that workers often manage more than one chat at once.)

As noted, productivity gains were highest among workers with the least experience, who resolved 35% more chats per hour when they used the generative model. Productivity was essentially flat for workers with the most skills and experience.

I hope this makes sense, I imagine the solution will be quite simple but I can't work it out (I'm quite new to R and not very fast at coming up with solutions to things like this). I thought maybe the diff function could come in handy but didn't get much further.
