The musical score was composed by Herbie Hancock and Michael Kamen.

The film reunited several key players from Predator. Aside from Weathers and Silver, director Craig R. Baxley was the stunt coordinator of Predator, and actors Bill Duke and Sonny Landham appeared in both films.

The film received a negative reception from critics,[6][7][8] with a score of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes from 15 reviews.[9] On Metacritic the film has a weighted average score of 36 out of 100, based on 9 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[10] It grossed $20 million on an $8 million budget, and made another $45 million in VHS sales.[2][failed verification]

The film is the subject of the first season Lazor Wulf episode, "Keep It Moving," in which the last VHS copy of the film has been stolen, and the main characters attempt to recreate moments they believe are in the film in order to become more like Action Jackson and retrieve the tape.[12]

The film would be referenced again in the second season Lazor Wulf episode, "Keep Going," where this time the series' title character is convinced that Action Jackson is a documentary and pesters Carl Weathers into admitting that the actor himself killed off the character.[13] In the episode, Weathers is voiced by WWE Superstar Xavier Woods, who previously wrestled in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling under the name Consequences Creed, in a gimmick inspired by Weathers' Apollo Creed character from the Rocky film series.[14]

Action Jackson is a 2014 Indian Hindi-language action thriller film directed by Prabhu Deva and produced by Gordhan P. Tanwani and Sunil Lulla.[4] The film features Ajay Devgn in a dual role, alongside Sonakshi Sinha, Yami Gautam, Manasvi Mamgai, Kunaal Roy Kapur and Anandaraj.

Action Jackson received mixed to negative reviews from critics who praised Devgn's performances, cinematography, music and stylized action sequences, but criticised its humor, plot and screenwriting.

Prarthna Sarkar from International Business Times gave Action Jackson 3 out of 5 stars stating it is a "bad dream" for viewers.[6] Gayatri Sarkar from Zee News gave 1 star out of 5 and wrote that the film failed to entertain the audience.[7] Deepanjana Paul from Firstpost praised the font used for the credits saying it was legible.[8] Rajeev Masand rated the film 3 out of 5, feeling that the film has excessive action.[9] Under a headline calling the film a feminist milestone, Raja Sen for Rediff rated it 3 out of 5 stars, saying that while the film is filled with "relentless absurdity", the women propel the narrative in a refreshing way.[10] Rachit Gupta of Filmfare gave a similar rating of 3 out of 5 stars stating that the genre mixing of unscripted comedy and stylized action is " too inconsistent to garner any appreciation".[11] Mumbai Mirror similarly gave 3 out of 5 stars and responded positively.[12]

The crime spree supplies the movie with a big action opening that is totally illogical (how do the killers appear and disappear at will?) and several other inexplicable moments (why did that guy have the exploding briefcase handcuffed to his wrist?). None of the mysteries are explained at the end. Nor is any attempt made to fit together the two incompatible styles in the movie: (1) the scenes where Weathers turns into a speeded-up Superman who can run 40 miles an hour and jump out of tall buildings, and (2) the slice-of-life realism of welfare hotels and police headquarters.

I have a genuine question: was this movie meant to be a comedy/parody of action movies? I don't think it's as meta as Last Action Hero, but I think there are parts where the movie that know how jokey this is.

I don't think this movie is as smart as True Lies or Austin Powers or other action comedies/genre parodies. I just think it's a little bit aware of how goofy it is instead of just inept filmmaking. Definitely some of this movie is just lazy writing that doesn't make sense but some of it feels to me that there is a little bit of "wouldn't it be funny if..." going on here.

3) On a side note, here is a handy chart to show all the crossover actors who appeared in this movie, but also Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Commando and Predator. As I call this film... It's the Kevin Bacon of 80s Action Films.

Fun Fact: Some of the Toy Story film makers are fans of Carl Weathers character in Action Jackson. His performance partially inspired the character of "Combat Carl" who is voice by Weathers. He's in the first film but his character had a leading role in the short Toy Story of Terror!

Carl Weathers deserved better material. I can picture his 'Action Jackson' being its own film series, like 'Lethal Weapon' or 'Beverly Hills Cop', but the script is lame and the character of Jackson gets outsmarted, surprised and undermined at every turn. Hardly what you want from an 1980s action hero! This movie tried to launch Weathers as his own brand name outside of being the sideman in Arnie and Sly pictures. Unfortunately, the vehicle he was given to drive lacked an engine and wheels!

It's really thin in terms of plot: Craig T. Nelson is trying to take over the auto-worker unions by killing off any naysayers and Weathers is trying to prove it (rather haphazardly). His best gambit is trying to turn Nelson's trophy wife (played by a pre-Basic Instinct Sharon Stone) and that's about as much effort as he puts into the case lol. There is potential within the premise for some edgy social dynamics -- Weathers is a blue collar black cop and Nelson is a rich white collar criminal -- but the film has no balls to tackle that. It was the 80s, I guess. I imagine if this were made now then there would be a heavy focus on the race angle -- which isn't necessarily a good thing in every movie about black characters, but it would have at least given this bland cop thriller some bite.

Black action heroes tended to be relegated to Blaxploitation movies that seldom ever got wide releases or drew in mainstream audiences, hence why this is pretty watered down. But it's a real shame that an attempt to create the African-American equivalent of a John McClane or Martin Riggs wasn't launched with a better script and bigger action. Nothing happens for most of the runtime. There are a lot of listless scenes of the characters interacting and sharing some macho smack-talk; a LOT of focus on Nelson's villain; wild action scenes that you can count on one hand; plus two sequences where Weathers' co-star Vanity (a singer from the era) performs two songs in their entirety!

That said, the opening salvo is great! We witness a couple of auto-worker union employees getting hunted down and killed at their office after hours. It's really violent, silly and suspenseful, almost like a horror film, and it sets us up for a classic 1980s Joel Silver-produced thriller with OTT violence and a gloomy neo-noir atmosphere, but as the story starts to play out it becomes clear that the rest of the film lacks the same urgency and excitement. And Jackson himself is charismatic but clueless. Bizarrely underpowered for a tough guy lead. And there are no standout moments where he establishes himself as an action hero worth rooting for. He's just a guy in a movie who can take a punch.

Craig R. Baxley directs -- who action aficionados will instantly recognise as the man behind B-thrillers 'Stone Cold' and 'I Come in Peace'. Baxley is very good at staging crazy action sequences with lots of cars exploding and automatic weapons fire. This looks as if it was his big shot at making a mainstream A-picture for the big screen, yet his usual brand of second unit-led mayhem is strangely muted here. Not nearly enough action for a film that has "action" in the title. As mentioned, this was produced by Joel Silver (allegedly the biggest tool in Hollywood) and you can really tell it's one of his productions from the look, sound and tone. Much of that is thanks to Silver Pictures regulars Matthew F. Leonetti (cinematography) and Michael Kamen (music). It has that 'Lethal Weapon' look and sound, just not the content or the charm.

The best thing about the movie is the casting. Pretty much every henchman actor of the 80s pops up in this from Bill Duke to Robert Davi to Al Leong, etc. It's insane how many familiar faces from other 80s action fodder flit by in blink and you'll miss them bit parts. I just wish the movie was more exciting and gave these guys cooler stuff to do.

'Action Jackson' could have been a really cool action thriller in the vein of other Silver action pictures only with a black star in the lead. But the script is dull, the pacing plods, and the only parts where Baxley comes to life with his direction are during action scenes. The rest is not nearly excessive nor exciting enough.

Hello fellow bad movie fans. Today I'm writing about Action Jackson. It stars Carl Weathers and TONS of 80's familiar faces in the movie. In re-watching this for my 80's channel, I had a great time. It was full of action, bad one-liners, bad acting and over the top scenes. Everything you'd want in an 80's action movie! Sure it's not reinventing the wheel but I think the movie is self aware of that. I find that some people consider it a bad movie, I say it's a cult classic! Curious to what your thoughts are on Action Jackson. Bad movie or cult classic? If you'd like to check out my video review of Action Jackson it's below. I look forward to hearing other's opinions on this film. Thanks for reading! be457b7860
