On February 8, 1986, Detective Arleigh McCree and Police Officer Ronald Ball, LAPD Bomb Squad, responded to a bomb call in North Hollywood Division. While attempting to dismantle a pipe bomb, an explosion occurred fatally injuring both bomb technicians. These two officers were expert bomb technicians who had contributed extensively to the research and development of numerous techniques for dealing with bombs that are still being utilized throughout the world today.

The Bomb Squad has maintained an aggressive research and development program to develop new tools, equipment, and procedures to render explosive devices safe. Civilian and military Bomb Squads throughout the world use the tools and procedures developed by the LAPD Bomb Squad. This equipment and technology has saved the lives of several bomb technicians while they worked on explosive devices.

The Bomb Squad is continually striving to improve the quality of its contacts with the community, as well as with police and fire department personnel at the scene of an explosive related call. The Bomb Squad is dedicated to enhancing public safety at the scene of any incident involving explosives. A recent increase of terrorist bombings has generated an increase in public awareness and the need for quality equipment and training to match these new threats. The Bomb Squad has set specific goals designed to promote not only the safety of police personnel but of the public at large in dealing with explosive devices and bombings.

Today, the Bomb Squad has 28 full-time Bomb Technicians who respond to all explosive-related incidents throughout the City. The Bomb Squad maintains an on-call team to respond to calls 24-hours a day. Each Bomb Technician carries essential equipment including the bomb suit, x-ray, bomb blanket and other special tools. This equipment is required to handle the variety of explosive-related incidents.

Powerful explosives can be made from common consumer goods, like pool sanitizers, fertilizers and paint removers, that are bought and sold every day in the United States. In the hands of the wrong people, these basic materials can be used to make improvised explosive devices. Homemade bombs pose a credible threat and can cause mass casualties, infrastructure damage and spread fear among affected communities.

Reliance upon bomb squads comes at the price of placing members in dangerous environments. With that in mind, the first responder community identified an improved robot as a critical need for bomb and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD).

Technician evaluators noticed how the ability to remotely change tools down-range significantly reduced the time required to disable a bomb, in comparison with the use of one arm. In addition, the second arm preserved forensic evidence at the scene while disabling the bomb, keeping it intact and avoiding detonation.

The following year, S&T and the Israelis successfully demonstrated and delivered a prototype of the accessory arm robot in Fairfax, Virginia, where many state police departments and industry companies participated, including the Michigan State Police, New Jersey State Police, Fairfax County (Virginia) Police and DAGER Technology. The robot accessory arm on an Andros Wolverine Robot performed a series of joint operational scenarios, leading to the development of a product tailored to the operational requirements of bomb squads.

Created in 1973, the primary mission of the SBI Bomb Squad is to safely mitigate explosive hazards anywhere in the state of North Carolina.

The SBI Bomb Squad consists of bomb technicians who are certified at the FBI Hazardous Devices School. These bomb technicians, as well as the specialized equipment that they use, are strategically located throughout North Carolina for efficient response to calls for service.

The SBI Bomb Squad routinely responds to improvised explosive devices (IEDs), weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), suspicious packages, explosive disposals, booby traps, as well as other high hazard incidents.

In a typical year, the SBI Bomb Squad responds to approximately 130 calls for service. Additionally, the Bomb Squad assists with dignitary protection details, public safety sweeps, and special event planning.

SBI bomb technicians use robots, X-ray equipment, bomb suits, rigging equipment, containment vessels and a host of other specialized tools in order to execute their duties.

The SBI Bomb Squad also provides explosive detection K-9 capability. SBI explosive detection K-9s are certified through the United States Police Canine Association. Like other Bomb Squad assets, SBI explosive detection K-9s are located strategically across the state. The explosive detection K-9s and their handlers receive ongoing training and certification to ensure that this resource is always ready and reliable.

The Vermont State Police Bomb Squad was formed in the late 1960s. The first Vermont State Police bomb technicians were certified in 1971. Bomb technician certification continues to be obtained through the successful completion of a basic course of instruction held at the Hazardous Devices School located at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. Hazardous Devices School, operated by the FBI, is the only facility in the country that trains and certifies public safety bomb technicians in the United States. Presently this basic course of instruction is six weeks in length. Bomb technicians are further required to successfully complete a re-certification course every three years back at Hazardous Devices School.

Bomb technicians complete advanced level trainings on a variety of topics such as post-blast investigations, advanced explosive disposal techniques, and homemade explosives as part of a continuous learning program. Bomb technicians are also trained to serve as hazardous material technicians. This continuous learning requirement allows the bomb technicians to remain aware of current trends in the field.

The Bomb Squad averages more than 100 responses annually, including preventative missions (such as sweeping a location before a special event) and reactive responses to explosive devices; suspicious packages; old, abandoned or unclaimed explosive material; bomb threats; and illegal fireworks.

Oklahoma has seven (7) FBI-Certified Bomb Squads. These seven squads are placed in nine (9) locations. Each bomb squad has received a standardized bomb response robot and other equipment to ensure they have the latest state of the art equipment.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Bomb Squad has statewide jurisdiction and assists communities not already covered by a local jurisdiction. Team members will assist other bomb squads as requested. The bomb squads facilitate the capabilities of the Regional Response System to coordinate a response anywhere in the state of Oklahoma.

The State Police Bomb Squad has checklists organizations can use to be prepared to get as much information as possible when they receive a bomb threat or suspicious package. Share this information with law enforcement.

The Bomb Squad maintains contact with all Southern California bomb squads by attending and participating in the Southern California Bomb Squad Commanders quarterly meetings, as well as attending the Santa Barbara County Arson Task Force meetings. The FBI maintains jurisdictional control over the Bomb squad and the training of its technicians. The Bomb Squad technicians receive their initial six week training at Redstone Army Arsenal, located in Huntsville, Alabama. Once our bomb technicians receive their initial training, they return to the Redstone Arsenal every three years for re-certification. In addition, the squad trains twice a month and each Bomb technician attends a 40 hour Hazardous Materials course. Bomb Squad personnel also attend various trainings sponsored by the ATF and other federally funded agencies. The Bomb Squad participates in annual training exercises, which are state run and determine the readiness of various local, regional and state resources.

In addition to the training that bomb technicians participate in, they have a variety of equipment at their disposal to deal with the various incidents that they train for. Some items of equipment are remote controlled robots, x-ray systems, bomb suits, rigging equipment and commercial explosives. On average, the Santa Barbara County Sheriffs Bomb Squad responds to approximately 30 calls per year.

The Hazardous Devices Unit, known informally as the Bomb Squad, is one of only 13 bomb squads in the State of New York and is accredited by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Comprised of highly skilled and exceptionally trained technicians, the members of this unit respond to calls for service that include: possible improvised explosive devices, bomb threats, military ordinance, volatile chemicals, deteriorated explosives and dangers fireworks.

Connecticut has three municipal and one state; fully established and equipped Bomb Squads. Stamford is one of these bomb squads. The Stamford Police Bomb Squad was established in 1962 and consists of multiple certified Hazardous Devices Technicians.. The Stamford Bomb Squad is a fully equipped and highly training unit that has the capability to effectively operate multiple hazardous device operations and/or weapons of mass destruction incidents as they may arise. Our Technicians are members of the FBI-EOD/WMD Joint Terrorism Task Force and as members are also sworn Federal Marshals.

The bomb squad mission is to respond to all explosive or incendiary incidents including exploded bombs, unexploded bombs, suspicious packages or recovered explosives found within the jurisdiction of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. The squad also provides bomb squad support to a variety of State and Federal agencies, including Dignitary Protection details. In addition to the operational activities, the squad provides training to various law enforcement agencies within the Central Ohio area on the topics of bomb scene safety and bomb searching and explosive identification. The bomb squad also conducts public talks to civic groups and private industry on the same topics. The bomb squad is a fully equipped and Nationally Certified bomb squad. Equipment includes protective suits, X-ray equipment, package disrupters, and a remote control robot.The Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad is comprised of 1 Sergeant, and 10 Deputies. e24fc04721
