Downhill or road. I have epic bikes in both and I admittedly suck. I can stunt bike just fine, I can snow race just fine, but I get scorched in bikes. Anyone got any pro tips for a noob just trying to grind some stars?

The goal of Knox Bike Racing is to promote high quality, fun and affordable bike racing events in and around the Knoxville, TN area. Come out and give racing a try for the first time or experienced racers can see if they have what it takes to stand on the top of the podium in the Expert class!

It is important to remember that hydration and fueling are important but that we can do a lot without, so if you end up short, drop a bottle, miss a feed it is fine. In short events the difference is not huge, especially if you do not get stressed about it. Practicing *WITHIN REASON* some fasted rides or less hydrated rides are worthwhile if it is likely in races. While we stress about getting that sugar-high it is more common that riders loose time trying to get bottles out of cages, carrying heavy and bulky hydration packs and just plain thinking too much about food/water and not about racing. Focus on the race when you are racing. Your training is meant to make all these practices automatic and normal, do not do different things on race day.

To Be Determined is an online journal of bike racing, adventure, photography and all things cycling. This storytelling effort is led by a New York City based cycling team that loves all things cycling - from bikepacking to cyclocross to crit racing and gravel grinders.

The City of Laramie Parks and Recreation Department is excited to pick up the torch from Laramie Racing to continue the tradition of Tuesday Night mountain bike racing in Laramie, WY. The City will be hosting a series of four races in 2023 on Tuesday nights at the Schoolyard/Pilot Hill trail system.

Coming from a team sports background in soccer and netball, I have never been entirely comfortable with "racing". In my younger years, the idea of weeks and weeks of training all for just one race simply did not appeal to me. But as I got older and the demands on my time became more and more and my ability to fit in with a team's schedule got less and less, I found myself entering races. Fun runs, triathlons and the occasional MTB race. While I'm always prone to a bit of nerves and doubt in entering any race, nothing was ever as daunting as entering a mountain bike race. Doubt had me asking myself questions like:

For me, club racing has been the most enjoyable aspect of my racing over the past year. It's the closest I've felt to being part of a 'team' since finishing playing soccer over 10 years ago. Each week, a group of people (my local club gets between 20-50 riders for their weekly race) that you've come to know over the proceeding weeks, shows up and races hard for a prized block of chocolate. While the top A grade women leave me in their wake within 100m of the start line, I still work hard to earn my place, knowing that the C grade men are desperately trying to chase me down. And as soon as everyone crosses the line, there's a bit of light-hearted ribbing of each other and more than a few laughs. The competitiveness, the camaraderie, the laughs, the pain, I have loved it all.

As one of the most well-known mountain bike races on earth, getting into the Leadville Trail 100 MTB has always been difficult. LT100 Qualifiers are long and tough, with lots of climbing. They are similar to the classic course at Leadville in that they consist mainly of rugged jeep roads of gravel and dirt. A qualifier event could not only gain you entry into the LT100 MTB, but it could also boost your corral starting position in the Race Across the Sky!

When I first learned of the Strider Cup balance bike race in Fort Worth, Texas, and considered taking my own three-year-old son, August, to the event, this was the gulp-inducing scene I envisioned. A national series of four races, the Strider Cup is organized by the Strider balance-bike company and culminates in September with the World Championships in Salt Lake City. Strider bills its race series as an all-inclusive event, a festival that exposes your child to the positive aspects of competition at an early age. Yet, the thought of my own son lining up against Strider prodigies from Japan (who swept Worlds in 2016) made my palms sweat.

He got so many inquiries about the unique bike from people who saw Bode ripping around on it, that in 2007 he started Strider. The company boomed, and now its name is synonymous with balance bikes. To date, Strider has sold more than 1.6 million bikes, which are distributed in over 75 countries. (McFarland credits his Strider distributor in Japan for the popularity of balance bike racing in that country.)

Today, anyone who's serious about teaching a kid to ride at an early age will likely eschew training wheels in favor of a balance bike. Dozens of different companies now sell them, including every major bike brand. This transformation in kids' bike technology has led to an entire generation of toddlers who rip on two wheels.

I spotted the founder of Strider bikes, McFarland, leaning over the course railing amid the proud parents, holding his camera phone aloft in eager anticipation. The start gate dropped, and the kids took off at a pace just slightly above walking speed. This was not Japan.
