Listening often to a wide variety of books will enhance your overall listening skills. Because the pace of speech in audiobooks is typically slower than that of conversation, listening to audiobooks with text is a helpful segue into being able to understand and join in on the more fast-paced conversations of native speakers.

Listen to the audiobook while you read along with the written version of the book. Make note of the unfamiliar words and phrases. Note the meaning of the word in context (within the sentence) to better understand its meaning.

Widely regarded as the greatest American novel of all time, Moby Dick is a story of whaling, an adventure, a romance with eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and an epic drama rolled into one. Get the ebook and audiobook.

I am an A1 spanish student, creeping up on A2. I am finding it really difficult to focus on focused study, and have recently been spending quite a bit of time listening to english audio books whilst reading the spanish translation. Easy stuff like for example Harry Potter, or Roald Dahl or Douglas Adams.

Your Listening-Reading (L-R) procedure is similar to that suggested by a polygot for her L-R method, but if I remember correctly her Step No. 3 was in reverse, Read L1 (English) and Listen L2 (Spanish in your case). There is a good thread on LingQ about the L-R method. Limited resources in spanish audio (L2) is a problem. I am trying it with one book by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho translated in Spanish and English and with a spanish audio available, as I would like to try to learn portuguese next.

MikeK50 is correct to say that there is a method called Listening-Reading and that one of the steps is to listen to the target language (Spanish) while reading your native language (English). I tried this lesson a bit myself, but I went the extra step of importing the target text and audio into Lingq, thereby getting the best of both worlds.

Chris I am far from an expert but I think if you are at a beginner level, you should find some simple sentences or text with audio, maybe ten, and listen to that for a while, at the same reading the spanish and looking up what the words mean. I think that would be far better. However, seeing you are figuring out how the spanish worked that is beneficial, but I would try and figure it out listening to the spanish and reading the spanish.

While I understand some readers preference for print, I think there are just as many, or almost as many, who prefer audiobooks. I like them because I can be productive with everyday tasks while enjoying a good book. And The Levee is a great, well-read, audiobook. The length is perfect.

I love audiobooks. I listen to them as I walk, drive, cook. I also read my own audiobooks. Thank you for your excellent description of oral storytelling. There is a place for print books and audiobooks and each of us can decide which book to appreciate in which form.

I'm listen-reading them and although I'm also aiming for an LA accent (Colombian in particular), the reader's accent doesn't bother me, as it's clear, even, and easy to understand, which are my priorities when working with audio.

Message 3 of 621 October 2007 at 2:41pm | IP Logged I can't find Harry Potter audio books in ANY dialect of Spanish - except for the audio of the very first book. The first Harry Potter Spanish audio book was/is a great learning tool for me and it is frustrating to not be able to find the other audio books. Can someone provide a link to where one could buy Harry Potter audio books - other than the first installment of the series?

Message 4 of 621 October 2007 at 4:17pm | IP Logged I'm beginning to think the first audiobook is the only one in existence. It's a similar story with French; I've got the first three audiobooks, but nothing after that. I've found it in Dutch, German, and Japanese too, but the only language for which I've seen full sets available is English - American and British. Right now, I'm halfway through listen-reading the second book in French. Once I'm done, I'm going to start reading it in Spanish - but without audio accompaniment.

Message 5 of 611 November 2007 at 11:39pm | IP Logged I've been looking into the Harry Potter books and audiobooks in Spanish for a while now, and I can confirm that the only audiobook that has been released is Volume 1, and it's in Castilian Spanish.

Volume 7 will be released some time in 2008. The publication date hasn't been announced yet and the Spanish publisher is becoming very unpopular indeed. Volumes 1 to 6 are easy to find both in US dollars and British pounds. You can find the links at

In addition to the online options below, be sure to check your local public library for Spanish audiobooks, or books with CDs. Many libraries have extensive collections, and you might find some goodies there!

For teachers in the classroom, Spanish audio books could make a good station or alternative activity for native/heritage speakers. If you have older students who are still struggling to read, giving them a simple audio option can also be a helpful alternative.

Unite for Literacy is a wonderful free site with good-sized collection of Spanish digital books for kids. You click on to turn the pages and listen to the audio. Most of the books are written in simple Spanish (though they are written for native speakers), with non-fiction themes like colors, toys, art, animals, and more. The site includes many other languages, in addition to Spanish!

Scholastic has recently made a number of their popular titles available as read-alouds on YouTube. This is a great source for popular books that have been shared with permission online, and we found many of our favorite titles (like Harry, el perrito sucio) available in Spanish.

The Spanish Experiment currently has nine free stories for listening, including classic fairy and folk tales. When you click on the link, the first five will show as free, and the last four with a membership. But if you click on over to The Fable Cottage, they are free too! These stories are narrated with a very high-quality audio and include a script you can follow with a few images along the way.

rbol ABC has a big selection of texts for Spanis stories, with audio for each one. The stories include sections like Cuentos clsicos, Cuentos para dormir, Fbulas, Cuentos de animales, Cuentos de princesas, and more.

Mundo Primaria has a huge collection of Spanish stories for kids. You can access the cuentos as a video of the text being read aloud. I like the simplicity of having the audio and text together, with a clear reading voice to follow.

123 Teach Me provides audio of short stories for kids, along with a script of the story. There are currently 18 stories available, with comprehension questions and scripts to follow along with.

The Bible App is free, and technically more than a simple audiobook. You can download the stories, which include text, audio, and images that are slightly animated. This is a huge resource to have at your fingertips, if you read the Bible with your kids!

There are several paid options for Spanish audio books. Amazon Audible seems to have the largest collection, with titles like Buenas Noches, Luna, stories from Beatrix Potter, and popular folk takes. It also includes many chapter books like Esperanza Renace, Manoltio Gafotas, y El Prinicipito. (There is a monthly fee.) Click here to go directly to the collection of Spanish-language books.
