Update: reading comments below, very likely dedicated audio players have more for that, but VLC plays just about any audio or video file format you throw at it, and is cross-platform for consistency with desktops (incl Linux). It's a world of personal preferences and priorities. (A lot of my offline music was ripped from CDs twenty years ago on the old Microsoft WMA, that many current players don't even see.)

I just use a 3rd party File Manager app from the Google Play Store, which one should have anyway, as the default Google management has been awful up to v6, which I use. Many File Manager apps have music & video players built in & even sound equalizers built in. No need for a "special" music app if one doesn't need it to do streaming. Perfect for playing files from the internal or external SD card storage. And it's likely that one needs or could use a separate file manager app with better functions than usually come with the device.

I have my whole music library of 16,000 tracks on my phone and I use an app called Station Playlist Creator to make playlists for a variety of moods. PowerAmp handles them comfortably but you could just put tracks in folders and get PA to shuffle them if you felt my way was overkill.

I like the way many music players "discover" the SD card and in-built phone storage, allowing access by various criteria such as title, album, artist, and genre. That would be a nice feature for photo organizers. I wonder which ones do that?

If this player doesn't work, find a suitable one among the top 9 music players for Android : SoundCloud, Google Play Music, CloudPlayer, RocketPlayer, YouTube Music Player, Spotify Music, Phonograph Music Player, Shuttle Music Player, Poweramp

I haven't run into a player that doesn't support SD cards -just to encourage you to try them all, looking for other features you need. I've stored music only on SD cards for several/many years and have always found the software setting for that on various apps I've used, including those for subscription services.

I'll have to retire my Lumia 950 by the end of the year and have been starting to use Android since last year when I got a Sony XZ1 Compact. I've shopped for phones that have strong -to me- music and photo features. On the Sony, I have been using VLC satisfactorily, and I like that it plays a lot of WMA lossless files I have, which most others could not. I don't like that it doesn't have indexing, so that I have to scroll through all my songs to get to the one I want. With ~8000, it can be slow. Microsoft's own iterations have allowed tapping on the letter of the alphabet you're on to get an alphabet index and select an S, for instance, short-cutting the process.

Normally when I play a mp3 file its in the my files app, which just loads a simple inapp player. I can't even select a different app to open my files, as soon as I hit "open with", it starts up Spotify. I have Google music I stalled but that's been disabled for a long time, that's about it.

Okay. So I uninstalled any apps that were listed as capable of playing MP3s. And now MP3s play in the files app. I think the MP3 player in the files app is just there so you have something to play them with if you don't have anything else that can. I don't know why they chose to do it this way, but.. it seems you're stuck with it auto-opening Spotify unless you have a dedicated app for playing MP3s.

So yeah. Unfortunately I think the only 'fix' for this is installing another app that will play MP3s. I'd recommend VLC if you just want something that can play a bunch of audio (and video) formats. It's open source as well. Otherwise you may want to go with Google Music or Samsung Music as I believe they allow you to sort MP3s into playlists.

So I have an S21 running Android 12, and I noticed earlier this week that instead of playing MP3 files through the default media player, my phone started using Spotify. I don't know about you guys, but Spotify won't let me play any of my mp3 files. I tried uninstalling Spotify, which let me use the default player, but as soon as I reinstalled it the issue started happening again. Does anyone have a fix for this? It's getting annoying.

Hello I would like to give a suggestion to you who have content such as music, movies on your Nextcloud server.

Here at home I use it in conjunction with the Plex media server and I can listen to my music and watch my videos on any Android and iOS device, and not to mention that in the music option it is possible to create playlists

That's really your only option. Dropbox is not a full-featured audio player. While it can play audio files, it does not have most of the common features you would want in an audio player. The basic functionality is meant for previewing files. It doesn't advance to the next track or have shuffle capability.

I have Android 7.1.2 and I couldn't find the default music player. I found a setting in the Google Now open it and go to the Burger Settings and again settings and you will see default music player Spotify you will need to link the account. it works with Google voice or Google assistant..

What you said is good, but does not address this solution. This is only useful when music is started via Google Service (such as the Google Home or Google Assistant). Would be a good idea in my opinion to have direct support at OS level too.

I have not been able to discern any telltale evidence of what's causing/playing the music. No notifications, not sure where to look for log files to examine? I have MWB installed....and the phone scans clean.

The BubbleUPnP app from Bubblesoft. It is one of the best UPnP/DLNA/Chromecast control points and comes with a local player that can access both locally stored files, files made avaialble by LAN UPnP and DLNA servers and files made available by Qobuz, Google, Tidal, etc.

My automotive customer is using PCM5102A in their car infotainment system. They find that there is pop noise when end-user pause and play music in the music player. Is there any suggestion to solve the pop noise isuse?

If XSMT pin is pull low manually before the puase the music, there is no pop noise. But when user press puase button, processor can not pull XSMT pin to low in 21ms. So system can not fix this issue by pull XSMT low automaticaly.

When the music player is paused, processor will stop outputing BLCK and LRCLK. When user replay the music from pause, processor resend the BCLK and LKCLK. There will be a spur on PCM5102A output and cause the pop noise.

When I go to select the music folder, the file menu doesn't allow any navigation. Using the "Enable" button does nothing. I've manually changed the permission on the storage to "allowed" but still no luck. Have had the same issue with (1) v3-build853-arm64-play [853004-ea856f2] from the Play Store; (2) latest v3-853 build from the download page here and (3) the older v3-841 build from the download page here. If I select a music file in the file explorer, Poweramp will play it, but the song won't be included in the library thereafter. ff782bc1db
