I went into the config files on another computer that I also have Brave installed on, copied the dictionary file, pasted it in the dictionaries directory of the computer which was having the issue, then restarted Brave and the computer.

I did an experiment. I uninstalled Brave, uninstalled Chrome. (I had installed Brave then installed Chrome to try to fix the dictionary issue with no success.) After uninstalling, rebooted, then downloaded and installed chrome, then downloaded and installed Brave. Spellcheck and Dictionary in Brave now work.

As a writer, I frequently need to determine the correct spelling or definition of words. I also need to use a thesaurus to find alternate words that may have a somewhat different connotation than the one I might otherwise use. Because I frequently use the Linux command line and text-mode tools to do much of my work, it makes sense to use a command line dictionary.

No additional configuration is required. The minimalistic /usr/share/doc/dictd/dict1.conf file specifies the remote server for the dictionary databases. This tool uses the Dictionary Server Protocol (DICT) on port 2628.

There's a dearth of information about dict. The URL provides only a web-based interface to the dictionaries. The man page covers syntax. But the command is a useful and fun command to have handy. Stardict on the other hand supports most of the things I want but doesn't support epwing or any way of converting the dictionaries from epwing to stardict format. There are a number of tools to read epwing dictionaries so I think this could be done, but I don't think stardict dictionaries currently support images or media like epwing dictionaries support so converting epwing dictionaries would lose that data. Stardict also has a number of strange plugins and a net dictionary protocol which seems strange. I'm not sure if the server side code is open either.

Lots of apps generally have little or no support for dictionary tools - Evince has no way to define words, I would think it really helpful to be able to click words & see a definition in a document reader. That is what makes a computer more useful.

I have found a Firefox plug-in which is quite good for definitions (English popup dictionary) & Firefox has a built in spellchecker & right-click-suggestions, which is exactly what all the other apps are missing.
