The Best Electric Breast Pump -What is a Breast Pump?

What is a breast pump?

A breast pump is a type of device whereby a lactating mother is able to extract milk from her breasts ready for use by an infant. The ability to withdraw breast milk ahead of time can make it much simpler to plan feeds by either freezing the milk, or storing it in a fridge to be used within the next few hours.

How do breast pumps work?

These devices often incorporate a suction cup that is placed around the areolas of the nipple, which is attached to a storage compartment (often bottle shaped). There are two types of pump; those being manual and digital. With manual pumps the mother (or assistant) will need to create pressure within the device by pressing a dedicated flow compartment.

This compartment will act to force suction to occur within the cup, resulting in the extraction of breast milk from the nipple.

With an automatic or digital pump, the need to do so manually is removed and there will typically be settings on the device that will instruct the inner components to create pressure and lactate milk from the mother’s breast. As the milk is extracted it will be stored within the attached bottle or cup and this component can be removed and stored elsewhere, or fitted with a teat to allow the child to suckle.

Why do people use breast pumps?

In some cases the mother might prefer not to breastfeed her child directly – often as a result of swelling within the breast tissue which can lead to pain and discomfort. There’s also the factor of time, as some infants can take several hours to complete a feed. By extracting the milk ahead of time it can be possible to ensure that a child is fed whenever it needs; whilst allowing the mother to rest and recover from childbirth.

Further down the line, and when the baby is able to feed on its own, a mother might still choose to use a breast pump to save herself time. When manufactured products aren’t preferred, breast milk can be stored for days on end and can simply be heated through to ensure that the infant isn’t exposed to the man-made ingredients within powdered milk; whilst allowing them to receive all of the necessary nutrients that they would normally get from breast feeding.

There are dozens of different products on the market that can make the process as easy as possible and many mothers consider these types of devices an absolute asset to their lives while their new born needs to be fed by the bottle.
