Frédéric Tomas (Assistant Professor, Tilburg University, The Netherlands)
I currently work as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication and Cognition at Tilburg University (the Netherlands). There, I have expanded my interests to the place of miscommunication in persuasive contexts, the role of misinformation in decision-making, and the importance of AI in the criminal justice system.
My teaching duties reflect my interests in these topics: I have designed the Honors course entitled "(Dis)Trust in Connected Societies", and have taught "Statistics for Premasters", "Data and (Mis)information", or "Persuasion and (Dis)agreement". Yes, I like parentheses.
I earned my Ph.D. in Social and Cognitive Psychology (Université de Paris 8, France) in 2021. My work has focused on computational deceptive discourse analysis. Specifically, I provided the first framework encompassing NLP, written deception detection, and the imposition of a cognitive load to detect deceit.
I regularly collaborate with various national police bureaus (France, Switzerland, Belgium), in order to train them in the science of deception and to make them aware of the current international best practices.
