'Sine waves in the Sand' A Labyrinthine Sonic Garden and Synthesizer for the home.

The Labyrinthine Garden is an original synthesizer concept developed as a sonic object for the home environment. Built on an abstract referential lore which links the circuits of synthesizers to the sands and imagine locations of various fiction novels. It can be viewed as an ontological toy from which we can look to study sonic relations in the home environment. Just a much it is an aesthetic object, one that was made to sit in a reading corner, home library or on a coffee table. Its playful interface is meant to encourage interaction, it is also a social tool, one that can be both a conversation and shared experience. The hand written accompanying manual illustrates the story of its circuits, functions and sounds and helps to breakdown the interface and wider conceptual underpinnings. Of equal importance is the bookcase, built from the same reclaimed woods and provided to establish the positioning of the instrument as one for the home. This was a multi-layered project and concept, one inspired by multiple sources, ranging from works by Yukio Mishima, Jorge Lois Borge, Kobe Abe and Hiroo Isono, along with drawing upon traditional wood crafting techniques. Utilising a number of original circuit designs including staircase generators, modulators and a cross fader.
