Our two raised beds, a "Sunshine Garden," built on our chapter house property in 2020 has been recognized by the Conservation Committee at the national level. Chapter members grew, harvested, and donated over 400 pounds of produce to give to homebound members and local food pantries in 2020. Work on the garden continues into 2025, as we plant "three sisters" gardens with beans, corn, and squash, in addition to fresh herbs
Following in the chapter tradition since saving William Henry Harrison's Indiana home, our chapter continues to preserve local history. In July of 2020, the chapter marked the grave of Elihu Stout, printer of the first newspaper in the Indiana Territory, the Indiana Gazette. His grave is located in Greenlawn Cemetery.
In 2024, our chapter had our chapter namesake, Francis Vigo, officially recognized as a Revolutionary War Patriot. With no direct descendants and no military service in which people served under him, Vigo's accomplishments were often overlooked. This marker, placed at his grave site in Greenlawn Cemetery, notes how Vigo provided money, supplies, and information to the cause for independence. The marker was dedicated In October 2024 in a joint ceremony wtih the Sons of the American Revolution.
One of DAR's missions is to support youth and educational initiatives. You can find our chapter members volunteering in classrooms, presenting Youth Citizenship or Good Citizens Awards, or recognizing outstanding JROTC cadets. We're proud to support the Children of American Revolution by including members in our chapter activities or by hosting C.A.R. Society meetings in our chapter house.
Chapter members Lindsay Owens (2020), Haley Lancaster (2014), and Sarah Downing (2012) have been named Indiana's Outstanding Junior member for their service to NSDAR. With chapter meetings outside of business hours, we are a chapter that is accessible for working women and we give Junior members (women ages 18-35) a chance to serve.
Our chapter cares about supporting veterans in our community. We send hundreds of holiday cards to veterans in hospice care. We have provided Christmas Comfort Gift Bags for veterans in local assisted living facilities and taken an active part in Wreaths Across America. We offer regular support to the local chapter of Irreverent Warriors, and through our Project Patriot Committee we have adopted local soldiers to support them and their families. Since 2023, our chapter has sponsored Banners for Veterans, a program that places Veterans of local service men and women around the town of Vincennes in storefronts and on light poles around the town. The banners are displayed around Fourth of July, Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
