Beyond Nature and Culture
On the occasion of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and the Republic of Korea, the French Pavilion brings together six artist from the artistic residency programmes developed by France in East Asia : Villa Kujoyama in Japan, Villa Formose in Taiwan and Villa Hanbul in the Republic of Korea. Through this selection, the pavilion highlights artistic practices developed through residencies collaborations across East Asia, exploring the relationships between humans, matter, the living world and territories. The pavilion also reflects the richness of the partnerships forged with local cultural actors, who support the artists in their research, creative processes and dissemination. With the support of Villa Kujoyama and Villa Formose, the pavilion's artistic and technical direction is jointly led by the Cultural Service of the Embassy of France to the Republic of Korea and the Horanggasy Creative Studio.

The works on view were created through Villa Hanbul, France's newly established residency network in Korea, and reflect ongoing artistic exchange and collaboration with the country. Sculptor Mona Oren's Yuki III (2025) was created following the artist's visit to a lotus farm near Cheongju. Combining natural Korean wax with Japanese Haze wax, the work transforms these materials into poetic sculptural forms. After joining Villa Hanbul Busan in autumn 2025, Floryan Varennes worked closely with Busan's last remaining community of Haenyeo. Drawing on this collaboration, he created sculptures inspired by the everyday lives of the Haenyeo. His work bears witness to a history and way of life that are gradually disappearing.
