Do you remember the dying red-bellied woodpecker I found back in June? This is it now. The work of blowfly larvae, fungi, and bacteria. It probably died due to injury by domestic cats, or by a vehicle. After a whole summer of decomposition, only bones and feathers are left. The little brown circles surrounding the carcass on the picture to the right are Bird's Nest Fungi, which are actually feeding off the decomposing mulch, not the woodpecker.
