During the first major heat wave of March, every single Silver Maple tree in Framingham gets fuzzy with red and white flowers. It is amazing. This year, the trees suddenly bloomed on the 12th. The individual I am looking at grew both male and female flowers. You can tell the difference because the male flowers are white with black tips, while the females are stubby and pink. Silver Maples are wind pollinating, relying on masses of male pollen to fill the air, and fertilize the female flowers. This mass pollination causes those famous maple helicopters, and strong allergic reactions in some people. Looks pretty cool though.
