After about an entire month of decaying underneath the snow, all that could be revealed by it melting was the tough hide and skeleton. the image to the top left shows the skeleton exactly how i found it. the image to the right is of the hide around the skull, showing the face of the animal. Turned on it's side, I can see the teeth and skull shape of the fox.
It most likely died of starvation as food becomes much more scarce in winter months. I had seen a red fox around here a few times over the summer. It is probably that fox.
I have a plan to clean the skull, scapula, jaw, and portion of the vertibra. I am building up a sort of bone collection now. I already have a deer scapula, vertibra, antler, and snapping turtle skull. The next day (25th) I used my remote learning lunch break to machete off the majority of the hide and cartilage. The process smelled horrible. With a now clean skull, backbone, jaws, and scapula, I left them to dry outside after treating them with rubbing alcohol and covering them with paper towels.
