My Lockdown project - FPL Analayser (iOS App)

Lockdown... what has it meant to you?

  • Has it been challenging?

  • Has it been constructive?

  • Has it given you quality time with the family?

For my wife and I it has been challening working from home and looking after a 3 and 4 year old. On the flip side there was the moment we watched as my son moved from nappies to potty.

Then there are the weekends and the time saved not commuting or shopping, and getting away with wearing the same jeans and T-shirt every day (we all do that .... right?).

Then frustration... no sport, no Premier League, the inability to go out for more than an hour or see family and friends. The weather not great, and then we have had the government daily briefings - watching and listening anxiously for an update.

To step outside of the chaos and into a world more familary I accelerated a project I was working on before Lockdown - FPL Analyser.

The Premier league may have been on hold, but it did not stop me on reflecting how I could make better player selections. Being an avid football fan I always wanted to create an App for my favourite past time. So I decided to build an App that would allow me to select a team - without being bias towards my club.

I am sure there are other Apps and websites available to view FPL stats. The challenge here for me was to create a tool that would:

  • Link my FPL account. I wanted to see my team and all the leagues I was in.

  • Be available quickly at my fingertips.

  • Visualise player and team stats in a way that is easy to observer/read (easier said than done when the device screen is a phone).

  • Function across iPhone and iPad. Utilising more of the screen on an iPad.

But what is it I wanted to get out using the stats?

  • I wanted to dig deeper and see a player's form based on points over the last 3 to 5 games.

  • Identify what sort of influence a player is having on games.

  • Identify what strength of opposition they have faced and will now face.

  • Can I use the App to predict the likelihood of a player scoring/ keeping a clean sheet.

  • Identify if a player is likely to play

  • To see if a player in the dream team is still performing

All of this using a quick search mechanism and easy to visualise graphs.

Lockdown is not going to last forever - at some point my life will get busy again. My goal was to escape, have some fun and create a useful tool. I've now released version 2.0 and want to do more. I guess this is a good start.

With the FPL soon to restart... it is time to review our teams and celebrate the return of something that gives us great pleasure. Available on the App Store to download for free, enjoy and select your team well!

Users can also login to FPL using their email and password from within the App. The details entered are not used for any other purpose other than for you to view and analyse your own team.
