The Foundation For Pre College Medical Education
The Foundation For Pre-College Medical Education is a non-profit charity organization dedicated to providing the resources and support students need to learn about and pursue a medical career. Currently, according to the American Association of Medical Colleges, only about 5% of medical school attendees come from low income backgrounds. Our aim is to inspire and cultivate future generations that will even the statistics and to make medical school and attending college for pre-med more accessible to all bright students passionate about healthcare. By providing free pre-med focused college counseling, immersive medical kit activities for classrooms, science read alouds, health science summer programs, and more for no cost and hope to provide the same extra-curricular opportunities in underserved areas as higher income students do and to continue to expand!
Hi I'm Maya and the FPCME was founded by me in late 2025 during my freshman year of high school. My inspiration for starting the foundation was largely built around my own experience trying to gain insight into my dream of being a doctor and scientist. In my search for learning opportunities, I quickly learned that almost all that allowed me to even come close to what I was interested in cost thousands of dollars, some even being intentionally deceptive to persuade students and their families into paying thousands. It struck me how lucky I was to be able to afford, thanks to my family and putting hard work into fundraising, what would eventually contribute to the future quality of my college education, but it also struck me how malicious the industry of putting a price tag on education had become. The commercialization of education had created a system where companies and organizations alike prioritized profit to the extent that students who couldn't afford to fork over ridiculous amounts of money were blocked from achieving their dreams. The need for free extracurricular resources, particularly for primary and secondary students interested in medicine, is larger than ever today as lower income students are blocked from prestigious colleges and medical schools due to a lack of access to advanced profiles fueled by money. My aim is to combat and de-center predatory college counseling, pre-college programs, "research" programs, and other student targeted corporations that overcharge and underdeliver to students and their families, denormalizing profit based education. I hope that this organization can serve as the guide and support necessary for students from diverse backgrounds to enter the medical field with equal opportunites and that the initiative I am starting can inspire others to do the same and make the changes they want to see in the system.
