2023 SEASON
Congratulations to our 2023 Match Play Champions!
Terry Dempsey and Rhonda Salmen
All WGA members are invited to team up with a partner of her choice to participate in the season-long Team Match Play. The event features three rounds as detailed below.
Cost per team is $50
Sign up begins April 4th, 2023 at the Opening Dessert and will close on May 1st, 2023. Sign up through Foretees.
Pool Play: May 16th - July 31st
You must schedule and play a 9 hole match against each team within your flight. Points are earned per match and accumulated throughout the season. The team with the highest accumulated point total in each will advance to the next round.
Matches may be played anytime within the allotted time frame (including during Tuesday play and/or Twilight—see “What if” below). Once a date and time is selected for the match, contact the golf shop to secure the tee time. The golf shop staff will prepare the official scorecards for the matches. Official cards are to be returned to the golf shop staff upon completion of a match and scores will be posted directly to each player's handicap history.
All rounds must be completed by July 31st.
Format & Scoring: In Team Match play, the two partners compete together as a team with each player playing her own ball throughout the match. After each hole, the best NET score from each team is compared and the team with the lowest score wins the hole. The same thing occurs for all 9 holes and the team with the most points wins the match.
Win a hole to earn 1 point.
Tie a hole to earn ½ point.
Win the match to earn 1 bonus point.
If a match is tied at the end of 9 holes, each team will earn 4.5 points toward their overall round 1 score.
Note: All ladies participating in round 1 this year will earn 100 Ryder Cup points.
Bracket Play: August 1st - August 31st
The team with the highest accumulated point total within each flight will advance to the second round. This round is single elimination bracket play. Teams will play a 9-hole match and the winning team will advance to the next round. Scoring is the same as round one with teams earning one point for winning a hole and a half a point for a tie. If teams are tied after 9 holes of play, the match will continue into extra holes until a winner is determined.
Round 2 matches must be completed by August 31st. If you win this match, you will move on to the final match to compete for the title of Match Play Champions!
Championship Round: September 1st - September 20th
The final two teams will compete in the final round of match play. This match will be scored the same way as the previous round; however, it will be played over 18 holes rather than just 9. The winning team will be the Match Play Champions!
BONUS: All four players competing in the final round will earn 100 extra Ryder Cup points!
What if....?
The WGA Board and Golf Shop made sure that there are plenty of Thursday night games that will correspond with getting a match completed. If you are wanting to play match play during a Thursday night game, you must contact the golf shop to let them know ahead of time in order to make sure you are paired together and your match play cards are prepared.
The following Thursday night dates will allow for you to schedule matches: May 25th, June 15th, June 29th, July 13th.
If two teams are not able to come to agreement with scheduling a date, then the Golf Shop will flip a coin. The team which wins the coin flip will be given 5 points and the team that loses the coin flip will be given 4 points toward the accumulated score for round #1.
A last minute cancellation or a no-show team will be awarded zero points for the match. The remaining team will automatically be awarded 5 points toward their score and will be given the option to play the match against par in order to earn up to a maximum of 7.5 points.
This will be treated the same as a no-show and the team that concedes a match before it is played will be awarded zero points within their accumulated point total. The remaining team will automatically be awarded 5 points and will be given the option to play the match against par in order to earn up to a maximum of 7.5 points.
Any matches that are not completed and recorded by the due date for each round will result in the Golf Shop completing a coin flip. The team which wins the coin flip will be given 5 points and the team that loses the coin flip will be given 4 points toward the accumulated score for round #1. The coin flip will simply determine the winner within the second round and the final round of match play if scheduling does not allow the ladies to play.
Yes, substitute players are permitted; however, you must find a sub that has a similar handicap to your playing partner. The GHIN handicap index of the sub must be within +/- 4.0 of your playing partner for that substitute to be eligible to play on your team. If you need help finding players within the WGA that have similar handicap indexes to your partner, please contact the Golf Shop staff. They can help you identify eligible people to ask to sub in.
If you are not able to locate a substitute within the +/- 4.0 handicap index, a substitute with a lower handicap index will play to their handicap. A substitute with a higher handicap index will be maxed out at the 4 shot differential.
The golf shop will have a wild card drawing to fill in the fourth spot. This means that the second highest accumulated point total from each flight will be entered into a random drawing. The golf shop will randomly draw one of those teams and that team will be given the fourth spot and will advance into the second round.
