Sienna Drake, PhD Candidate
Sienna is a PhD candidate who joined the Fournier lab sometime before the pandemic struck. Her lab calendar is still on January 2020, which speaks to both her lackadaisical approach to changing calendar pages and the uselessness of calendars in the 2020 miasma. She enjoys the Thomson house bean burrito and growing tomatoes on her balcony.
Tristan Simas, PhD Candidate
Tristan is a third-year PhD student studying the role of 14-3-3s on axon regeneration and their potential as druggable targets. His work focuses on the development of in-vitro regeneration assays using custom microfluidic devices for high-throughput screening. In his free time, Tristan DJs for Overloud Events, collects records, develops open-source software and tinkers with retro TVs and game consoles.
Aliyah Zaman, PhD Candidate

Matthew Hintermayer, MD/PhD Candidate
Matthew is an MD-PhD student that joined the Fournier Lab in January 2021. He studies the roles of miRNAs in regulating signalling hubs in neurons that facilitate axon regeneration and neuronal survival following neurotrauma. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time outside riding his bike or rock climbing, brewing craft beer, and playing with his cat.
Kali Heale, PhD Student
Kali is a second-year PhD student studying neuroprotective microRNAs in the EAE rodent model of multiple sclerosis. Before joining the Fournier lab, Kali completed her BSc. (Hons) at Memorial University of Newfoundland, and her MSc. at the University of Calgary. She has been said to have the coolest desk decorations in the whole lab. In her spare time, Kali enjoys biking, skating and hunting the MNI for free food.
Elizabeth Hua, MSc Student
Elizabeth is an MSc student who started in the Fournier Lab in January 2022. She has an uncanny love for performing experiments and learning new lab techniques, and you can often find her playing with her mice or convincing people to attend various social events. Outside the lab, Elizabeth can be found dragon boating on the Lachine Canal or tucked away in her room trying to finish another painting or novel.
Abdulshakour Mohammadnia, Postdoctoral Fellow
Abdulshakour Mohammadnia (Shakour) obtained his BSc and MSc in general biology and cell and molecular biology in Iran from 2008 to 2015. His research during this time focused on stem cells and computational biology. For his PhD, he specialized in generating cell models using CRISPR technologies to study pediatric brain tumors under Prof. Nada Jabado's supervision at RI_MUHC, McGill University (2016-2022). Throughout his PhD, in addition to contribution to the field, Shakour has developed expertise in cancer biology, epigenetics, signaling pathways, and various wet lab techniques. After completing his PhD, Shakour pursued a postdoctoral position to expand his knowledge in neuroscience. He joined the labs of Profs Alyson Fournier and Jack Antel at the Montreal Neurological Institute to investigate multiple sclerosis (MS). His research involves exploring extracellular vesicles as potential biomarkers for progressive forms of MS, along with conducting comprehensive bioinformatic analyses of sequencing datasets obtained from patients, cell models, and animal models. Beyond his academic pursuits, Shakour has a wide range of interests. He is passionate about plants, engages in content creation, explores topics in cosmology and geopolitics, and finds solace in reading.
Mohammed Noor, MSc Student
Mohammed completed his honours bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto, double majoring in neuroscience and immunology, where he studied the changes in the dural B cell population during a mouse model of MS. This interested him to understand further neurodegenerative diseases and potential therapeutics for promoting axonal survival and regeneration, which brought him to the Fournier lab. Here, he aims to investigate and screen a cohort of pro-regenerative and survival miRNAs and their targets for promoting CNS axon regeneration. In his spare time, he likes to go on long walks in the city, watch documentaries and play with his pet parrot!
Christine Gianfelice, MSc Student
Christine joined the Fournier lab in September 2023 as an MSc student. She completed her Bachelor's degree in Honours Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University. When she is not reading papers and running experiments, she enjoys reading fiction novels and running 5Ks.
