Committed to member-led workplace campaigns:
Created U of M AFSCME Assembly, bringing together 100 activists from Locals 3800, 3801 and 3937 to strategize and build joint contract campaigns
Our assembly-led campaigns have won a $15 minimum wage, six weeks paid parental leave, non-discrimination for trans workers, and partial restoration of the Regents scholarship
Our assembly also worked to expose administrative bloat and skyrocketing tuition at the U, which resulted in a Wall Street Journal expose, and MN Legislative mandates to freeze tuition and cut administrative costs
Committed to building worker solidarity:
As former national director of the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador, led labor solidarity delegations and helped develop international campaigns to support health care unions fighting privatization and to stop CAFTA, the Central American Free Trade Agreement
Helped build support committees for striking teachers, nurses, airline mechanics, and bus drivers
Helped organize commemorations of the 1934 Teamster strike
Started Twin Cities Labor Movie Night
Co-chair of the Labor Notes Higher Ed Workers Committee
Built a coalition of students, staff, and faculty at the U, including AFSCME, Teamsters, and non-unionized workers, and undergrad and grad students
I am running for secretary of Council 5 because I strongly believe that we need leadership that has a vision, strategic plan, and energy to move us forward in the fight. I think that the Four 4 the Fight slate and our platform are what AFSCME Council 5 needs.
