Hello, my name is D, and I am an 8th grader at El Segundo Middle School. I am adopted and very happy with my family. I was adopted through foster care (fost-adopt). When I was 4½, I came to live with my family. It was really hard for me at nights. I would cry for 3 hours because I didn’t know where I was.
Eventually, I stopped crying because I realized that I was safe, and I loved, listened, helped, and respected my mom, dad, and sister for the rest of my life. My family is the best family I could ask for. They are always there for me, and I am there for them. I chose this project because this is a chance to help other children in foster care. I hope that my site helps more people understand foster care in a new light. I also hope that someone really thinks about fostering and maybe will adopt through foster care.
My school has a project for 8th graders called a MYP Community Project, and this website is part of the project. The MYP Community Project gives all 8th graders like myself a chance to address a need in our local, state, national, or global community through service action. The first stage of this community project that I did was investigating. For this topic I had researched a need in the community and then I had researched more and gotten information on the need.
I found out that there are more than 400,000 kids in foster care. You can also find out more on the Facts Page. The next stage is planning where I worked on what I was going to do to spread awareness on the need. I decided to make this website because I know that people like media and their electronics so they can just easily find. If you have the link then you have the website. The third stage that I am doing is the action, and this website that you are now reading is my action stage.
My action stage is to raise awareness and hope that you will consider fostering or even adopting children who are in foster care. The last stage is to reflect on what we took away from this experience. I learned that the kids in foster care need help in getting families. I also learned that when I was crying I was scared but I stopped crying because I knew that I was safe. Think about this if you adopt a child you will change their life forever, and if you make a bond with them, it will also change your life. So, please, consider adopting.
There are a lot of children in foster care, and the numbers keep increasing. This website is also telling you to at least consider adopting through foster care because we need the numbers to go down. I think that you should enter the process because it is fun, and if you pick a child you will really bond with them over the years. If you adopt or foster at first the child will most likely be upset, scared, and push you away. I would say that you should respect their space but also just try to sit down with them and talk with them. Then after you do that, you will form a bond with them and they will feel more comfortable talking to you. Then they will open up to your love.
