Faculty Script
Hello, my name is X, I live at ZIP code _______ and I’m a faculty member at San Francisco State University.
I’m calling you today to demand that the state legislature reinvest in higher education. The proposed 8% CSU budget cut has been switched to a 5% increase, but with no guarantee. We need you to ensure that this 5% increase will come to pass. Our university, like many others in the CSU system, is in grave danger of going into a negative spiral that it will never recover from. We have lost almost all of our lecturer faculty and tenure track faculty are now required to teach courses for which they have no prior training, making a mockery of the idea of why we are qualified to teach in the first place. The fact is that California does not have an active deficit and the CSU has enormous financial reserves that should be used for education. Please work to reinvest and revive public higher education in California.
Student Script
Hello. My name is X., and I live in District X. I am a student at San Francisco State University, a university that outwardly boasts its accessibility to the working class. I am calling because the proposed 8% budget cut to our university would be catastrophic for over 90 faculty members who work tirelessly to provide me and my fellow students with a high-quality education with the few resources they are already given. We now hear there is a proposed 5% increase, but with no guarantee. During my time at State, there has already been a 5% tuition increase, while over 350 courses have been cut. Please use the budget surplus to invest in education, rather than cutting more faculty, reducing the quality of education in California, and driving out educators and mentors from our state. Please restore funding and reinvest in the CSU.

Please protect the state’s future by insisting on a state budget that fully funds the CSU with NO CUTS and please reinvest in public higher education. The originally proposed 7.95% cut would have devastated the pipeline that moves migrants, minimum wage workers and their children into the skilled workforce, keeping California strong, innovative, and a world leader. The now proposed 5% increase has no guarantee. I am calling on you to reinvest in the CSU and support increased funding in our state university system.
