Joe started playing music at age 13, initially learning trombone and later both bass and guitar. Starting in brass bands, he has gradually branched out and now plays in multiple bands in a multitude of styles. 

In 2022, Joe got the gig of a lifetime, opening the Isle of Wight Festival main-stage on Sunday with Beth Brookfield. His own project, the Joe Thompson Trio, also opened the Isle of Wight Jazz Festival.
