In the absence of DNA analysis, hairs and fibers are examined in much the same way. Although DNA tests are much more conclusive than a conventional review, it is much more expensive and often takes months to receive reports. A simple review of hair samples under a microscope is capable of yielding valuable information such as species, condition of removal, past treatment, and/or color. A microscopic comparison of fibers to a known database will often reveal an origin which may or may not be conclusive.
