Shaun of the Dead is arguably one of the funniest horror-comedy films of all time. Period! Directed by Edgar Wright, the film has a cult status and every bit of the acclaim it garnered has been earned. The film is about Shaun (Simon Pegg), a washed-up almost-30 man who lives with his free-loading best friend Ed (Nick Frost). As Shaun is constantly urged to take his life seriously instead of just hanging out at the local pub as a regular, his attempts to get his life together coincide with a sudden zombie outbreak. The film doesn't just get the bloody elements and the comedy right but also manages to create a gripping human story from start to finish. Every moment, even the most mundane happenings like commuting are infused with humour. One can easily go the formulaic route with zombie movies but does Edgar Wright do that? Nope. From the opening track to the simple foreshadowing of the zombies' arrival the film doesn't miss a beat. And with everything going on it remains an inventive, relatable story.

"Do you like scary movies?" Ghostface, the big bad of Scream asks in an iconic scene. If your answer is yes then Scream is unmissable. The cult classic came out in 1996 after the era of slasher films and in a way revived the genre while turning it on its head. It broke the rules of horror-comedy. The film follows Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), a girl who becomes the target of a crazed serial killer and is a game-changer in more ways than one. Scream could've gone with the usual high school horror tropes but instead, it adds in a generous helping of satire with the, well, screams. The film is impressively self-aware in on the joke. It is unsurprising that it turned into a whole franchise. The latest installment arrived earlier this year.
